To not see the point in personalised reg plates?

Flexilexy · 07/02/2025 10:17

As I sat in traffic this morning trying to work out if someone's reg was their initials or if it was meant to spell a word out, I wondered why they even bothered.

If you have a personalised registration plate, why?

This is one of those things I've just never understood why anyone would spend money on it. I'd have to have a LOT of disposable income before this is something I'd part with cash for.

Google says "The cost of a personalized number plate can range from a few hundred pounds to hundreds of thousands of pounds."

I'll be honest, and show my judgemental side. Most (not all) of the people I know with personalised reg plates are skint, or just scraping by month to month. So it really baffles me that this is something they'd chose to do with their money.

But also, even if I could afford it, what's the appeal? I'm genuinely interested to know what makes you want one?

And yes, I'm fully aware it doesn't have any impact on my life at all, but one is allowed to ponder. This entire site is full of people complaining about things that aren't relevant to them, it's just a discussion.

YABU - Personalised reg plates are wonderful and not just an expensive bit of plastic that collects dead bugs
YANBU - They're totally fucking pointless

@Flexilexy my mum bought her granddaughter one. My mum is no longer here .
Gifts or a bit of fun are two reasons I see .

Glittertwins · 07/02/2025 13:23

@Flexilexy - because every time the car is changed, the plate is transferred. I don't have to update anything because the plate is still on all the databases.
I like the plate, I've had it so long so I don't really care about paying the transfer fee each time.

BarbadosItsCloserThanYouThink · 07/02/2025 13:23

I don't get it really when it's not obvious what they say but each to their own. Someone I worked with had one than symbolised her birthday and name, it was a gift from her parents. No one else would figure out what it meant but it made her happy.
Paul Daniels had one that said MAG 1C that was cool.

hby9628 · 07/02/2025 13:26

I have one. It was £250 so they don't have to be overly expensive or flashy. It's just our initials. I like it.

Grammarnut · 07/02/2025 13:26

My DSS has one. He is by no means skint. It's just a bit of fun on his fun car - i.e. not the one he drives every day.

ilovecherries · 07/02/2025 13:27

When I was a little girl (so about 60 years ago!) we happened to have an A reg car with my dad’s initials. It really tickled him and when he changed cars the dealer told him he could keep the plate, so he did and from then on just kept moving it. When he was dying a couple of years ago and was no longer able to drive he offered it to me. It makes me smile to see it on my car even though it’s not my initials or anything.

chocolatemademefat · 07/02/2025 13:27

I bought one for my son and I’m not skint. I did it because I wanted to. Why are you making arsy presumptions about thousands of people you don’t know? Find something important to take up your time.

SquashedSquid · 07/02/2025 13:29

Do people really care about what age other people think their car is? Why?

Time40 · 07/02/2025 13:30

Some of them are funny, and raise a smile - what's not to like about that?

My car has them (not funny ones, sadly). They came with the car and it was too much faff to change them. I felt like a bit of a tit for the first year or so as I knew people would think they were mine, but I got over it. I like them now. They are a part of the car's identity, and I wouldn't change them.

Rosalina2025 · 07/02/2025 13:31

I love how there are some sentimental reasons for having one like my relations.

It says more about the angry posters who are calling people wankers, knobs, dicks etc for having one. Even though these words are used as terms of endearment in my circle.

I couldn't give a shit about what people spend their money on. Also laughing at posters who assume they all cost thousands of pounds.

BilboBlaggin · 07/02/2025 13:31

I've got one. It's a letter, a number and then my three initials, so doesn't spell a word per se. I'll always remember it easily without having to think.

It cost a few hundred but some women spend more than that on posh handbags (which don't interest me), or a set of extensions. It's up to the individual what they want to spend their money on.

Howinthehelldidthishappen · 07/02/2025 13:36

I saw a van driving around with the plate AM15 EXY.
But spaced as so AM 1 5EXY.
No dear reader, he was not.
But it made me chuckle.

AmusedGoose · 07/02/2025 13:39

My husband bought me one with my new initials on after we got married. We have them as we often have new cars and it helps that people can't see your car is brand new. Either jealous neighbours or wantobe thieves. Iwould argue driving around with brand new plates is more flash than personalised. It is easier to remember if you change your car often or drive different cars.

Fabellini · 07/02/2025 13:39

Don’t care what people think of mine - it was a birthday present from my parents 20 years ago and has been on every car I’ve owned since then.
It has my initials and one number on it, and is on my brand new car, so no age disguising here.
I’ve never understood why people have such strong opinions about this though - as several other posters have said, everybody can like different things.

Hellskitchen24 · 07/02/2025 13:42

They make me cringe so hard. My dad bought one when he was having a mid life crisis and it looks utterly ridiculous every time I see it.

Shade17 · 07/02/2025 13:58

HotCrossBunplease · 07/02/2025 12:10

No, no butchery. They are literally the word written on the plate. No numbers at all. I see one every few weeks in London.

Well, obviously they’re not possible. So it’s either numbers that are seriously fucked about with or someone who just doesn’t give any kind of a shit and just puts whatever they want on a plate (which wouldn’t surprise me).

Taking your example, could be B3 CKY. Could be displayed as B3CKY, the same but with the 3 mirrored or with the 3 just replaced by an E. Ranging in levels from smacked knuckles to VERY naughty.

Spaced legally that’s a nice plate, any form of bastardisation just makes it a chav mess.

LoveBluey · 07/02/2025 14:14

I totally agree and had this conversation recently. Even if I was a billionaire I'd not get one. I see a registration plate in a similar way as I do my account number for the electric company. It just doesn't mean anything to me and is simply for admin purposes to identify my car.
But different strokes for different folks.

The same reason people buy anything that’s pointless and costs a lot of money - to wealth signal.

I don’t understand it. Buying a personalised reg for say, ten grand doesn’t prove you have ten grand. It proves you used to have ten grand.

God yes, my husband having his on his clapped out 25 year old car definitely is a wealth signal.

The plate is worth considerably more than the car which I find quite funny.

Yes it is a bit pathetic that some are still abusive after reading those sentimental reasons.

My Dad bought my Mum one about 30 years ago and it is worth a small fortune now as it is an abbreviation for a now popular acronym. My Dad died last year and it is very precious and will always stay in the family. Who cares what others think, you do you!

Mine is 'Miss and my initials' cost around £300.

Firstly I like no one can accurately date my car.
I can remember it for parking meters/forms etc and recognise it in big car parks.

Loveumagenta · 07/02/2025 14:28

It’s for Tesla twats with money OP! Everyone I know who has one in the U.K. ( it’s way cheaper in the US to get one) have money, so when it come to finding things to spend it on they need to get creative, as they have lots of stuff … or they’re super hard to buy for because they can afford to treat themselves whenever.

It's very sad. My relations are probably the least big headed or showy people I know. Their number plate wouldn't have cost much but to them they have something else that is a bit of their DS.

Ours on our campervan is part of how we designed it when we converted it. It's just a bit of fun. We didn't do it do impress anyone.

It honestly does say more about the ones who are name calling. Surely they are putting other people down to make themselves feel superior.

That’s what I was thinking!! If you care that much you can look up the registration online and find out…

Read my post above. You are so wrong.
