Weight loss and no period after baby. Anyone else?

Anyone else experienced weight loss after pregnancy? I'm getting worried and waiting for a GP appointment. Could it be that I have a 4yr old as well as a 5 month old? No period since November too.
I'm worried something is wrong.

Surely everyone loses weight after they have a baby? I weighed less 5 month pp then I did pre pregnancy, all the not sleeping and breast feeding stress.

Depends how much weight have you lost as to if you should be worried?

And periods can take a long time to come back, mine came back once I stopped doing night feeds. It's all hormonal isn't it.

My periods started between 3 and 6 months after my births, but it varies a lot for everyone, particularly if you’re breastfeeding (I was still bf when mine restarted but it’s not always the case).

Weight loss is normal so it really depends on how much and how fast you’re losing the weight. Why do you think it’s a worry?

Thanks. I am bottle feeding. I just keep worrying that I'm ill. My anxiety is heightened and I'm hearing a lot of bad news lately and think it may happen to me. People may think I'm silly but I am scared of bad health.
I can tell in my face that I've lost weight. People say how well I've done with my weight since birth but I haven't done anything to lose it! Hopefully I'm over reacting. The worry is going to make me ill 🙄😔

Okay. From what you’ve said I think you need to speak to someone about how you’re feeling mentally. It’s completely normal to lose weight post birth. You haven’t said how much you’ve lost? As in are you back to pre birth weight or dropping substantially below that? Without knowing all the details it sounds like an emotional response not an actual physical problem.

I hope you're right. Thank you. I've gone crazy googling every type of cancer over the last few days. It's consuming my time and energy. I need to focus on my boys and each day. I have a GP appointment next week and maybe they will send me for bloods just to confirm I'm OK. Who knows 100%!
Until then I need to focus on each day and be grateful to what I have. I don't know how much I've lost as I no longer have scales but I can tell in how I look and clothes.
Thank you for taking the time to respond. We just need to hear it from others sometines.

I had postpartum thyroiditis and indeed the first symptom was rapid weight loss (later joined by anxiety, sleeplessness and extreme irritability).

It's natural to worry , I rapidly lost weight after 2nd pregnancy I had awful morning sickness so I probably lost weight during pregnancy, could this be a reason? I bottle fed also so it wasn't breast feeding causing it. Stress from worrying won't help , making an appointment with your gp is good , they will set your mind at ease

Ask for your thyroid to be tested. A lot of women develop post partum hyperthyroidism. My main symptoms were weight loss, huge anxiety and insomnia. I lost almost 5 stone in the first year after giving birth. I've put 3 back on though!! It lasted for about a year then fixed itself with no meds.

I had the same - back in pre-pregnancy jeans 2 weeks post-partum and then years later diagnosed with Hashimotos - so overactive thyroid - normal thyroid - underactive thyroid all in the space of 3-4 years

Snowmanscarf · 07/02/2025 13:48

It always takes a while for your period to resume after giving birth. That’s not unusual.

LostittoBostik · 07/02/2025 13:54

Get your thyroid checked. It's quite common for thyroid issues to occur in the post partum period and weight loss is a symptom

LostittoBostik · 07/02/2025 13:55

But I was my absolutely skinniest one year PP. I was the same size I was when I was 17.

Six years later, that is no longer the case. At all. Sadly.

Yes (well, rather did not get it back, but could be linked to breastfeeding too).
