What could cause a fuse to trip?

Posting for traffic! Not long been homeowners and we’ve had a fuse trip. The switch is for downstairs sockets yet the oven and tumble dryer stayed on- it seemed the lights went out in the kitchen as well as everything in the living room. Does anyone know what might cause this and is it a cause for concern or can these things be random? Sorry if it seems an obvious question - we all have to learn at some point

Get a plug in socket tester, for a few quid they will give you an indicator light for Live/Earth/Neutral so you can see if a wire is loose perhaps. Cheaper than a lekky and quick. As pp said large appliances on separate fuses as they draw more power and usually have a higher Amp. Plug lights or sound into different sockets and hit the fuse switches on/off to map out which ones are on which ringmain, good to know to diagnose fault. Probably just too much power drawn from one circuit that tripped it, but could be a loose Neutral for example that's happen for us electricity basically vibrates wires loose over time which is partly why regs require access to certain terminals.

What would cause it as a one off? Do you think a nearby power cut might’ve been responsible? (Lots of houses had one around the same time but our estate didn’t, the one next did though)

A simple answer is not known until bits are investigated It tripped only the downstairs? so your house is maybe like ours, we have 2 separate circuits & maybe just maybe the trip happened to be faster than the other circuit. Having said that, it’s not a bad thing, it’s your protection, the faster it trips the better for you I can change a lightbulb & it trips but at least it’s working & working well

For me it's the oven and hob but it seems totally random. The other night I was cooking dinner and the fuse tripped and it wouldn't come back on for a few hours. Have had an electrician out 3 times and he can't work out what's happening. It's so frustrating as sometimes I come in and switch on the oven and the fuse trips and it stays down and won't come back on sometimes for 24 hours or more. I was so worried about cooking Xmas dinner but it behaved ! Not so good on Boxing Day but had microswacw for that so annoying
