Employers hell bent on working in the office full time

NewDayNewLife25 · 06/02/2025 13:41

Anyone else currently job searching and noticed the same thing?

I'm utterly miserable in my current role which is unfortunate as I've been there for 4 years and use to love it, but a new manager has changed things. I've always worked from home.

Anyway, I've been applying for jobs, mainly remote/hybrid working but also a few office based roles. I always state in my cover letter what I'm looking for, and my address is on my CV too.

A few employers have contacted me, saying that I'm perfect for the role, have all the experience/skills that's required and that they think I would make a great addition to the team. But as soon as I've asked about the working set up, that's it, done. They won't entertain it and decline my application.

I just think it's a shame. I know that they probably have plenty of applications, but surely it's more important to hire the right person, with the right skills and experience. Not just because that person happens to live near the office. Half the time they can't even explain why they need the person in the office. Is it control?

I'm fed up already!

Maybe you should be blaming the two members of staff who ruined it for everyone else rather than the company reacting to it

Nope I am totally blaming the inept, incompetent manager.

mainecooncatonahottinroof · 09/02/2025 16:13

I quite like it. Also I speak to people on Teams during the day.

It's sad the virtual world is replacing real life ....I know for training it's very difficult and has removed a lot of the benefits that proper interaction gave.

mainecooncatonahottinroof · 09/02/2025 16:33

Munnygirl · 09/02/2025 13:20

But it was the two members of staff who ruined it so therefore they are to blame and not the compnay

No no and no again. Managers are paid to manage. What is the point in them otherwise? The company should be dealing with the crap manager's failure to manage too!

What's the point in blaming the two staff? They're gone and everyone else has been unfairly penalised.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 09/02/2025 16:33

The only 2 employees complaining were the two main culprits of poor productivity when wfh

And I can practically guarantee they'll have been insisting how "very much more productive" they'd been while doing it Hmm

As PPs have said, management could of course have tried to deal with them while leaving the rest who were WFH effectively alone, except while they were doing it a further two things are very likely:
The first is that the pisstaker will go off long term sick, and the second is that others will become infected with the "Why should I?" virus

What the biggest load of BS 😂

Have you ever learned anything about business management?

mainecooncatonahottinroof · 09/02/2025 16:35

Munnygirl · 09/02/2025 13:40

I couldn’t agree more. I love it when someone says you are being defensive when you have a different viewpoint. I wonder if they teach that at business school?

No, they don't. Have you been yourself?

mainecooncatonahottinroof · 09/02/2025 16:36

Munnygirl · 09/02/2025 13:49

It made me chuckle

God you're easily amused.

Jossjt · 09/02/2025 16:36

mainecooncatonahottinroof · 09/02/2025 16:25

Employers should learn to manage in that case. Why are they wringing their hands and whinging about poor productivity? Deal with it. That's what you're paid for!

They are. By getting people back to work.

mainecooncatonahottinroof · 09/02/2025 16:37

Munnygirl · 09/02/2025 14:02

Again another childish comment. I don’t “start” anything merely disagreed with your opinions We are not in secondary school “staring” anything. And I can keep disagreeing with you if I disagree

Ironic.

If you read my posts, you’d know that answer 😜

BunfightBetty · 09/02/2025 15:03

As I have stated already, SOME companies NEED a physical presence in the work place. I’m not quibbling with that. My point, as stated several times already, is directed at companies stuck in old-fashioned ways of working for no good reason.

Thank goodness for a voice of reason!

There are some here who should probably be back pre-industrial revolution! The nature of business is to evolve, change and improve.

Successful organisations will be looking at ways to improve morale, employee benefits, work/life balance - all the positive stuff! Technology has developed to the point now where there is capability to work from home in certain roles. That should be harnessed. Change is good! Organisations who dictate to their staff in every scenario are not good to work for, will have disgruntled, demotivated staff. And you want to increase productivity??? Treat your employees well!!

YourArtfulPlayer · 09/02/2025 15:13

Otherwise known as straight talking. Possibly a new concept for you, maybe you skipped that lesson at business school, missed that chapter in your psychology study or just lucky enough to never attended a board meeting in your senior management career 😂

Is it necessary to be so rude to a poster who is one of the few on this thread that does actually know what she is talking about?

You could consider business school? You'd learn a lot.

mainecooncatonahottinroof · 09/02/2025 16:49

Ah, ‘I tell how it how it is, me’. 👍

Just waiting for, "I went to the university of life"!!!

Judging by the numerous threads on here with people trying to justify wfh (and often trying to get away with saving on childcare) wfh isn’t working for employers. YOU might want to do it but employers have been bitten before by people who take the piss and to be honest spoilt those people spoilt it for genuine wfh roles.

There was one poster who claimed she would bring her 2 year old onto Teams calls and everyone just smiled indulgently and loved her 2 being on the calls with them. Yeah - right…

Again, manager failure. That employee should be firmly told that she needs to use childcare. Our policy states that employees must not be minding their children during working hours.

WFH is working, and working well for my employer. Not everyone can, or want to wfh. I'm not aware of anyone having been disciplined for taking the piss, and I would know if there was.

mainecooncatonahottinroof · 09/02/2025 16:53

YourArtfulPlayer · 09/02/2025 15:33

So wait. Now we’re ignoring the fact that everyone did adapt during the pandemic and now 5 years after trying WFH and hybrid, a lot of companies are pulling it as it’s not working for them.

Honest to goodness I’d get a refund on those business courses and I hope you’ve got good advisors for your business.

Evidence?

Why are you fighting the battle for the poster. Is your life that mundane you need to bait.

What qualifies the poster as someone who does know what they’re talking about?

Education? Well I’m Chartered in my field.
Senior Management? Yup, got that too, hence the above.
Psychology? Heavy aspect of my career.
Business Owner? Six years and counting. 👍🏻

Jossjt · 09/02/2025 16:36

🙄

Most people who wfh are working. They'd have lost their jobs if they weren't. Yes, unfortunately some are letting the side down and bringing wfh into disrepute and I find that infuriating, but it's no reason to tar everyone who works from home with the same brush.

mainecooncatonahottinroof · 09/02/2025 16:57

YourArtfulPlayer · 09/02/2025 16:08

So, your sweeping generalisations are therefore just that, sweeping, ill informed generalisations as you own a niche SME and have zilch idea what other business are going through to make their decisions.

Glad it took about four of us and multiple posts of explanations to finally get to this point.

The 4 of you don't have a point between you.

You just keep harping on that the business decides. Business make poor decisions. They make irrational, unfounded decisions. They make decisions for the wrong reasons. They are not all seeing all knowing gods!

It has a lot of added benefits too. I work across a wide area. Previously a lot of my interactions would have been phone calls. Now I can see the person I'm talking to, which is much better.

Oh yeah, in body!

I'd be extremely pissed off if I was hauled back into the office because of two slackers. It certainly wouldn't improve my productivity, my commitment or my flexibility. It's a total failure to manage.
