AIBU to ask would you go on the pill or get a mirena coil?

Not for contraception as my husband has had the snip ✂️
I haven’t had a period for almost 2 years, diagnosed as pcos from a scan with bloods all normal, not yet perimenopausal.
Gyno dr has advised me to either go on the pill or get the mirena coil to kickstart my cycles as the womb lining building up can lead to endometrial cancer.
I’ve never had the coil but my sister has and it lead to an infection & heavy bleeding.
I was on the pill as a teen - mid 20s but had to come off it as it made my blood pressure high.
I feel like I have no choice really as cancer would obviously be worse than the side effects of either option but I would’ve like to avoid putting fake hormones into my body 🤔

Not a doctor but in your shoes I'd opt for the pill to see how I was getting on. If it's not agreeing with you, you can stop. With the coil you'll have to get it taken out, which they can sometimes be reluctant to do.

However, I think progesterone is slightly better absorbed internally.

I'm sure someone with more knowledge will post soon.

Pill is easier to stop.

I've got a mirena and haven't had a period in a decade as a result, which I think is relatively common. So I'm not sure that it would help you to have more regular periods...

Mirenaorpill · 06/02/2025 13:59

@whydobirds I thought that, I guess it might give me an initial bleed to shed some of the built up lining and reduce the cancer risk?

I'd say the same as others - do the pill first as if side effects you have more control over what happens. I've also had bad experiences on the Mirena and it can be tough to work out what's happening.

Kosenrufugirl · 06/02/2025 14:06

I am on my 3rd Mirena and I am loving it. (It needs to be replaced every 5 years). I have been on a pill for 10 years. It's far too much fluff for me now

whydobirds · 06/02/2025 14:12

@Mirenaorpill I couldn't tell you I'm afraid sorry

mindutopia · 06/02/2025 14:18

I would go on the pill. There are so many options and you can change to find the one that suits you. I would be worried about mirena possibly making things worse and then being stuck with it for months waiting to get it out. Most people I know did not have periods on mirena, which was one of the benefits of being on it.

I love my Mirena IUD (it's not a coil!), mainly because I don't get periods with it, so don't understand how that would help.

Mizztikle · 06/02/2025 14:27

I had irregular bleeding on the pill and got pregnant. If you're someone who will remember to take the pill everyday give it a go. I've been on the coil 2 years now, no issues at all apart from a light bleed a couple of times I have no period at all, I don't even think about it.

Bobbie12345 · 06/02/2025 14:27

I love my mirena.
The issue with pcos and no period is that the lining can be just slowly thickening and thickening, but not shedding.
The mirena thins the lining out over time so if you end up without a period it is because there is no lining to shed (which is perfectly healthy).
The pill would make you shed the lining regularly. (Or in some cases with the very low dose pills now it virtually stops the lining thickening too and people don’t always bleed. Also healthy !)
