Cat ate a small bit of foil

I know this isn't the litter box but I'm panicking and can't get through to the vet.

I'm pet sitting for a friend. Her large male cat has just eaten a bit of foil from a cheese triangle - I'd say it was smaller than my pinky nail. No idea where he got the wrapper from.

He seems absolutely fine ATM but I have no idea if I should take him to the vet or if he'll be fine or what to do. Help, please?

Anyone, please?

He will be fine . It will come out the other end !

I’d ask your friend what she’d like you to do. Personally, I’d not think anything of it - but I’ve always had outdoor cats who no doubt ate all kinds of junk when I wasn’t around to see, and unless they were coughing / had it caught in their throat I’d never find out. I imagine it will just pass through easily.

Thank you! My friend is in hospital and I'm desperately worried about her so really didn't need this too!

Not a vet, but I have a cat that regularly steals and eats cat food pouches from other peoples' houses. By biting through them, to to get to the contents. She's fine, has slightly glittery shits with all the bits of foil & plastic pouches she eats too. I wouldn't worry about a bit of cheese triangle foil at all.

Edited

My friend is in hospital and has been quite poorly so I don't want to worry her if I don't need to.

He’ll be absolutely fine.

Kaminari · 05/02/2025 12:10

He'll be grand, don't worry about it. He'll either throw it up or crap it out, probably on a freshly washed rug or pillow case.

IroningThrone · 05/02/2025 12:11

Thank you! I could hear him chewing something but was mid wee and couldn't get there quickly enough to take it off him.

He’d need to eat a large amount to have any issues!

IroningThrone · 05/02/2025 12:15

Thank you!

Honestly I've been so worried about my friend that I just panicked when I saw what he was doing.

The danger from eating something like this is them choking on it at the point they try to swallow it. Once it's down into the stomach it'll just get passed through the system and come out the other end.

Obviously if the cat actually looks ill you should contact the vet and let them know what happened, but it's highly unlikely there will be a problem.

ItGhoul · 05/02/2025 12:46

It will be totally fine! It's a tiny piece of foil that will scrunch into a speck and will simply pass harmlessly out of the other end.

IroningThrone · 05/02/2025 19:26

Thank you! He's absolutely fine and has just eaten his tea very happily!

An elastic band on the other hand 😬😬😬😬

MarsbarKitkatWispa · 05/02/2025 20:04

I would not be worried. My cat goes outside and I watch her lick the floor. Cats are minging creatures, but I do adore them and they have strong constitution. I would not worry if my cat ate a tiny bit of foil.

Newuser75 · 05/02/2025 20:11

He will be totally fine.

Succinct and accurate 🤣

My idiot ginger ate a bit of the edge of the plastic you get on top of a ready meal (I didn't realise at the time). It came out the other end...... he was totally unharmed!

LemooonSlice · 05/02/2025 20:19

My cat once ate a needle and thread - I dropped it and couldn't get it out of his mouth quickly enough. Came out the other end fine (2 bits of poo threaded together appropriately)

Btw just a word of warning, keep paracetamol pills away from him!!! If he's prone to eating things he shouldn't I mean. I had to rush my cat to the emergency vet recently when she ate a paracetamol capsule I'd left at the side of my bed when I went to the loo. Paracetamol is very toxic to cats. Thankfully I noticed it straightaway and she spewed on the way there as well. Phew. It was a costly bill. She was on a drip for 3 days, getting antidote injections and charcoal laced food and blood tests. I never in a million years thought she'd eat a pill. I'm v paranoid now about anything she sniffs.

Your poor cat! They really are idiots sometimes aren't they?

There's no meds out anywhere luckily and I still have no idea where he found the wrapper this morning!
