I’d check with the teacher.

halfpasteleven · 04/02/2025 21:35

Aa a teacher, I would have a major issue with this. If a child in my class wants to go to the toilet, they just get up and go. Anytime.
If all they can think about is wanting to go to the toilet, they're not going to be learning anything anyway!

TheaBrandt · 04/02/2025 21:35

It’s because otherwise they go to the loos and mess about,

I’d check with the teacher.

This is all the answer you need.

pinksquash13 · 04/02/2025 21:36

It's v disruptive when they all need to go in lessons. They need to learn to get their body into a routine. There isn't normally very long between breaks in yr1. Maybe 1 - 1.5 hours. I would imagine that the teacher will let them go if they are desperate so just tell your daughter to ask again if she really needs to go.

SleepToad · 04/02/2025 21:37

Hmmm is there a class chat? Are other parents saying the same? Your daughter is only 5 and as we know a lot of kids are not toilet trained when they start school. Could the teacher have said "can't you wait 2 minutes until lunch?"

BookArt55 · 04/02/2025 21:37

Talk directly to the teacher. It is very common for this age group to take something said out of context.

If the teacher does confirm it to be true then naturally raise your concerns.

Amammai · 04/02/2025 21:40

I would ask the teacher and if needed, the headteacher. It is unacceptable to stop young children from accessing the toilet. Older teens may be able to plan toilet breaks and remember to go ‘just in case’ but I would never stop a primary aged child from going.

In my y3 class we do have a ‘one in, one out’ system to stop them all going out together to cause a fuss. But even when I taught in y6, I would never stop them from going or make them feel bad for asking.

Bushmillsbabe · 04/02/2025 21:40

As others have suggested, check with the teacher. My daughter and whole class chat saying they were not allowed. The actual reality was they were not allowed to go until a child who had already been had come back, to stop messing around in the toilet, only 1 at a time allowed to go at a time.

Grumpyoldthing · 04/02/2025 21:41

Check with the teacher first , I work in a primary school and honestly despite all the stuff you read on mums net , we don’t stop little ones going to the toilet 🙄

they might be asked if they can hang on until the input is finished , encouraged to go at playtime or they might have to wait until someone gets back .

i would double check what’s been said.

Starr97 · 04/02/2025 21:43

I do speak to one parent and her DD and had a couple of accidents recently. I know my DD sometimes doesn't like using the toilet at school so I asked her about it to make sure she was going, she said the teacher says wait until lunch and no toilet during 'learning time'. She must have heard that at school to know its called learning time. But randomly a few times recently she will see 'someone weed in the classroom today'

Again, speak to the teacher.
I know it’s a bit hard to believe but oddballs post threads on MN about situations like children wetting themselves in school (piss trolls) so it’s probably a good idea not to give too much info about your own child’s situation. The last thing you want is a weirdo wanking off to the idea of your 5 year old wetting herself - I hope !
