Chillblains hell - help

Lilliea · 04/02/2025 20:21

Abyone who has ever had severe chillblains will know IANBU in posting here for traffic.

I have chillblains. I wear warm socks, warm shoes, try not to go from cold to hot too quickly. I still get them. I spend hours outdoors every day. I need some relief. It's moved from my toes to include my heels now. One of my heels has blistered. It's not that sore (apart from the blister), but the itch is so intense. It stops me sleeping just trying not to itch. Has anyone found anything that can relieve the itch once it's started?

Absolutely desperate!

Natural fibre, knitted socks. Not by a machine, by a human. Get yourself a couple of lose fitting pairs and your feet will stay warm.

Are you moving around when outside? I can't work out from the list. Why are you do long in the playground? Standing still won't help, you need to move to promote circulation.

Sympathies, OP. I get them on my feet and hands and it's so, so uncomfortable. It makes.me dread winter! However, this year it's not been as bad so far - I've not had to get the snowfire stick out once yet! Things that have helped are:

  • Fleece liners in shoes or boots.
  • Thin-soled ugg-style slippers at all times indoors, worn with two pairs of thick cotton or fleece-lined socks. My feet will still get cold even with extra socks so the sole is vital.
  • Avoid tight-fitting socks and/or shoes. They seem to make it worse by ?reducing blood circulation and airflow.
  • Also, warming your core seems to help. I wfh and use a wrap-around heat pad round my waist when I'm sitting at my desk. My hands have been much less cold as a result. If you're outside maybe one of those heated gilets could work?

I work outside and I sympathise with the sore hands and feet. Have you tried heated socks? They've made a huge difference for me. Mine stay warm on a low setting for around 8 hours but you can switch them on and off as you go from indoors to outdoors. My feet are so much better.

No usefuladvice to share, but would love to know more about @terracelane23's heated socks! Where did you buy these wonderful things? Do they get damaged when you're walking around in them (most heated stuff for feet seems designed for staying still in)?

Ignore the poster telling you to limit outdoor activities.
Vitamin B might help.

Heated socks - motorcycle gear shops
Cashmere or natural wool socks
Looser boots

Chilblains ruin my life for half the year. I have raynauds and get them really bad on my hands and sometimes feet. They're incredibly swollen, painful, they crack and itch. Nothing helps, I've tried it all! I completely feel for you. You need to get some hand warmers. Battery powered ones or even the ones you shake to activate. Sudocrem helps.

We use Zambuk and it’s brilliant. Recommended also to a friend and she was delighted as nothing else had worked. It’s lovely stuff.

This stuff : deleted link in case it went to my account !

This might seem a strange question, but how do you know you have chilblains? What do they look/feel like?

I think this might be what is wrong with my toes but only realised that by seeing this thread!

Google images will show you. It's really obvious once you know.

An old fashioned idea, but my ex used to get them. He swore by weeing on them in the shower! I'm not recommending that BTW, but desperate times need desperate measures.

Or use 25% urea cream instead!

@EnterFunnyNameHere I got my heated socks from Amazon (around £20 I think). I always wear two pairs of socks (even in Summer!) so I wear them over the top of another thinner pair. I usually wear work boots or wellies. They've got 3 heat settings. I usually have them on the lowest and the batteries last around 8 hours. I work outside all year round and they've made the Winter more bearable. I'd recommend them!
