Was I right to tell this boy off?

A teenage lad has just come whizzing round the corner of a busy road, on the pavement on one of those e scooters.
I was turning left, couldn't see him come whizzing around the corner and collided with him. I put my hand out in defense and fortunately he was able to brake in time before injuries happened, but it was a shock.

I told him, you cannot be whizzing round corners like that it's incredibly dangerous, you need to be careful. He just smirked, said a half hearted sorry and went off.

I despise those scooters on pavements and have had many near misses with grown adults on them.

It was James Street in Liverpool if anyone knows, very busy street near the docks.

I just think imagine if that were an elderly frail person or disabled etc. It could be incredibly dangerous.

Yes, they are dangerous.

hydriotaphia · 04/02/2025 13:56

Of course you weren't unreasonable, it's illegal for him to be on the pavement

Glowup33333 · 04/02/2025 13:56

Where are they actually legal, is it just on private land? They're all over liverpool and Manchester city centre to rent.

Glad you’re okay. I’ve had a near miss with a scooter last year - they do go fast! (And a teenager on the road was killed on one here a couple of years ago).

I think your response was partly out of shock, and I would have said something similar. .

Of course YWNBU.

If is a rental scheme they are legal on roads and on cycle paths. But even then he should not be using it on a pavement - that is illegal.

The privately owned ones are not legal except on private land.

If it’s a rental, you can try to get a picture and report to the rental company as the scooters have serial numbers and they log who has hired them when. Near us, they are actually quite good at fining their own users and even banning them if there is proof that they haven’t abided by the hire code of conduct (specifically not going on the pavement)

What a stupid place to be whizzing round on one of those daft little things. James St. is always chocka, pedestrians coming in both directions and plenty of traffic.

You did well to tick him off. You were also a damn sight more polite to him than many others would be. He got off lightly!
