Am I being unreasonable to think that water charges of 40.00 per month for one adult in a 2 bed terrace are unreasonable.

Yes it is unreasonable. Is it rates or metered

3 people, 5 bed house £37 a month on a meter

FuzzyPuffling · 04/02/2025 11:08

To a certain extent it depends on who your water company is. Rates are not equal across the country.

Metered or rates will determine whether it's unreasonable though.

Rates will likely be considerably higher for a single person

tillytoodles1 · 04/02/2025 11:34

Welsh Water were charging me £67 a month for a single person in a one bed flat. I asked them to fit a water meter, but they couldn't and they reduced it to £40 a month. I still think it's too much.

Catza · 04/02/2025 13:29

Very much depends. If you live close to the sea, you are paying extortionate sewage charges. If you have a garden, you use a lot of water in summer months (Between May and August we used £200 worth of water on top of our usual charge when we were had a veg patch).

Upstartled · 04/02/2025 13:33

Yes that seems really steep, op. We pay £60/ month with Northumbrian Water, 5 people and the washing machine.just.never. stops.

cheesegromit13 · 04/02/2025 13:46

Northumbrian Water £38pm, 2 bed, 1 adult 2 children. We had a summer of paddling pool fun so I blame that!

nancyastor · 04/02/2025 13:53

I'm in the Southwest and currently pay 85pcm (with every water saving device going). And we get the privilege of raw sewage pumped into our lovely coastline.

FOJN · 04/02/2025 14:38

I'm south west water and paying £53 for single person in a three bed house. I'm, metered and quite conscious about water usage because of the cost. It's exorbitant.

United utilities like SW Water has a huge coastline and that's why we end up paying more.

XenoBitch · 04/02/2025 15:16

I was paying £40 for one adult in a 3 bed terrace. That was unmetered. I have since had a meter fitted, and it dropped to £16pm. That is with Thames.

PixieLaLar · 04/02/2025 15:18

YANBU that doesn’t sound right at all!

ObsidianTree · 04/02/2025 15:20

I was paying over £40 for a long time. I got a recent bill and saw that my credit after my last bill was more than that bill. So cancelled the DD and set it up again for £5 a month. Id rather get a bill after 6 months with money I owe rather than adding credit for no reason. I'm sure the credit I have will cover the next bill.

I suggest you check what your next bill is and if you have a lot of credit, cancel the DD and set up with a token amount or one that you want to pay.
