Why is there so much more anti immigration sentiment NOW?

Half my family are Indian and came over in the 50s. My British Indian dad (born here) said he has always been very lucky to have not experienced much hate and discrimination. He has a wide friendship network of people from all backgrounds. I’m not saying racism doesn’t exist. Not at all, just that the environments my dad was placed in outright racism was minimal. And he felt pretty much like a normal British lad going to school, uni, clubs, bars etc. My white grandparents had their concerns in the 90s when my parents married mostly in regards to potential bullying any future grandchildren would experience but really they were fine with their marrying. I have genuinely never had one negative experience (granted I have been in somewhat privileged situations in middle class areas in the South plus am white passing but do look ambiguous when tanned).

In recent years I have noticed a shift (for the worse) in terms of negative sentiment towards immigrants/poc. For me, it’s the worst it’s ever been. I certainly did not feel it 10/15 years ago. I see SO many racist comments on social media. Was not the case previously.

Im just interested in having a discussion why this could possibly be the case? People are definitely more woke now than they have ever been.

Is it the social media sites themselves? Less moderation? More political influencers?
More media attention?
People looking for an excuse to blame the economic decline (pandemic, brexit, col etc)?

Just curious what people’s thoughts are?

It’s not rocket science to know that too much cultural change, too quickly unsettles the fabric of society.

It’s also not rocket science to know that when immigration on the whole brings in net takers (fact) rather than net contributors, those who have to pay for that will feel aggrieved.

Immigration in controlled numbers benefitted the country. Uncontrolled mass migration to this country in the last couple of decades, and especially the last 5 years has been a disaster. Economically and culturally.

If the government are aware about the importance of integration why did they cut funding for English language classes.

Is that your answer to the problems caused by mass immigration?

Maybe there should be compulsory English classes and culture lessons in these hotels then. Would be useful for the people taught and better than hanging around the streets with nothing to do

Completely agree. Otherwise they have to wait a long time. Sometimes a year. Rather than leaving them to rot in hotels.

im also curious regarding these hotels. I imagine they’re turned into dorms. Multiple beds in a room rather than single occupancy. But I could be wrong of course.

It’s a complex issue. Multi faceted. But yes this could help with integration.

Yeah it could help in the same way as trying to use sellotape to plug a gaping hole in a sinking ship.

I think racism has always been there it’s just people have more platforms now to express their despicable ideas

In my town they are. You are lucky if in your town they are not. We've had riots going on about it last year and the hotel set on fire.

I agree, It annoys me when white British people get all offended on behalf of people such as your colleagues,
when they themselves aren’t offended at all!!

Insane, unsustainable numbers.

Terrible integration (with more recent immigration)

Millions of people now in UK who don't even speak English

The existential pressure on housing and jobs

Decimation of working class communities (immigrants tend to settle where housing is cheaper)

Crime waves/escalated risks of terrorism

Importing of cultures with medieval attitudes to women

Just letting hundreds a day pour over the channel to be housed and fed at our expense

There's been tensions for a while but I think the Southport incident, coupled with the added attention on grooming gangs, has really ramped it up.

There is more anti immigration feeling because the numbers are much higher. X6 more than in the 8Os for example.
