Been out visiting relatives....I am actually shocked just how bad the litter is. Its bloody everywhere, frankly it's depressing. Where is our Pride? The motorways and A roads are so bad. Along with the absolutely shocking driving standards.

WTAF?

Politely, you are an idiot and an arse. Do you have no civic pride? No wish to live in decent clean surroundings? No preference for your children to grow up with respect for themselves and the neighours.

Actually, that was a reverse. I do. It wasn't like this when I was growing up. Something has changed. What do you think that is?

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 03/02/2025 17:52

YANBU. And it mostly belongs to fast food eaters, smokers and drinkers (alcohol and soft drinks), so tends to be younger people unfortunately. My parents taught me to put rubbish in the bin or take it home, maybe that's what's lacking. If you can carry food/drink somewhere you can carry the empty packaging back - so why don't they?

Yes that's what my dc would do

No excuse for this.

I hate littering

Papyrophile · 07/02/2025 20:52

I'm old and loud, and a former teacher, so I just holler at kids, pick that shit up and stick it in the bin. And mostly, they still do. But I concede that I am too old and fearful to challenge middle-aged oafs from doing the same.

Disturbia81 · 07/02/2025 21:02

Abra1t · 03/02/2025 15:55

I don't understand the mentality of people who think it's ok to chuck rubbish around like this.

Whenever I witness it in person I always find it so shocking, it shows such an awful attitude. Awful traits. Ego, lack of care for surroundings, expecting someone else to clean up after them.

suburburban · 07/02/2025 21:03

Nor do I

They are usually the people who are so wasteful in the first place and don't even bother to recycle

Whotenanny · 07/02/2025 21:05

It's so easy to not litter, y'know?

LlynTegid · 07/02/2025 21:08

I think the start happened when litter bins were removed in the 70s and 80s out of fear of them being used for bombs by Irish Republican terrorists. Then you have local authority finance reductions so that collections of bins or rubbish more generally is less than it would otherwise be.

No excuse though.

Lighteningstrikes · 07/02/2025 21:16

YANBU

In Germany (not sure about other European countries), you’re fined on the spot for dropping or dumping litter. It can be a very steep fine.

They’ve been doing it for decades and decades, that’s why it’s so clean.

We are decades and decades behind them.

Why our government doesn’t take a leaf out of their book is beyond me.

Yes still no excuse. I can genuinely say I've never dropped litter in my life, and for me personally that's down to upbringing and taking a bit of pride and caring about it.

It's getting worse by the minute because there are no consequences, so people don't have to give a sh*t.

Waggytail · 07/02/2025 21:33

Agreed, where I live is absolutely disgusting. But thanks for reminding me to lodge a few council street cleaning reports with the council today.

I blame people's shitty attitudes to their environments, but also we shouldn't be consuming the sheer amount of disposable pre packaged processed crap. A lot of the problem is laziness and disregard exacerbated by the food we buy, and seeing as its most the same 5 or 6 companies producing this stuff then they should be lobbied to take some responsibility for the issue. They make billions and billions so why shouldn't they!

wastingtimeonhere · 07/02/2025 21:42

I reported flytipped bags of rubbish and an old sofa, in ancient woodland near my house, on my dog walk route. It took nearly a year before it was all removed. It's also part of an advertised walking route. Hardly a great advertisement.

SpringBunnyHopHop · 03/02/2025 16:05

I’m constantly picking litter up from around my street. The majority of it always happens on the day the bin men have been, it’s not just people throwing rubbish onto the ground.

I do the same, the other crap I end up picking up are McDonald's wrappings and subway dumped out of cars onto the carpark and communal bins are literally a few feet away.

Purplebunnie · 07/02/2025 21:51

Pinkradiolady · 07/02/2025 19:48

My litter pickers arrived...today I did a small litter pick. A small piece of Britain ever so slightly cleaner.

Can you tell me where you got the litter picker from please?

Purplebunnie · 07/02/2025 21:56

I must admit I chickened out challenging the school girl who let her dog perform on the pavement. There was a group of them, they all stopped whilst the dog did it's business and I was hoping to see it picked up but no they carried on. still wonder if I should have said something but they were 14/15 and I wasn't sure how they would react. Town with a bitt of feral reputation

Our borough has these environment officers to fine people who drop litter but they tend to focus on the 85 year old pensioner who accidentally drops a sweet wrapper...they ignore the lads sitting on walls chucking cans and bottles after consuming contents !!

@Pinkradiolady

Thanks for the link. Often have to pick up after the bin man and I'm getting a bit stiff in my old age!

BackoffSusan · 07/02/2025 22:23

Totally agree. I'm in Switzerland and it's so clean, everything well maintained. I came over to the UK a week ago and even my 4yo was asking why there was litter everywhere. And when we got the train in the UK the whole train was filthy. My son has ASD so he really notices it but it was a nightmare, he didn't want to sit on the seat because it was dirty. The floors were covered in filth. It just isn't like that in Switzerland, they get cleaned.

suburburban · 07/02/2025 22:33

@bumblebee1000

Yes easy targets like the dc at school who get into trouble for a trivial matter but they won't touch the 'hard' dc

This makes me so angry and sad because it IS embarrassing when people like yourself notice this.
Maybe anyone who comes to visit should make it clear and our government's will listen! We know not all countries are like this! So why are we??

Haveacuppaandwaitforthistoblowover · 08/02/2025 00:39

I came onto rant because some neighbours in my cul de sac are really pissing me off now!

Litter all over the place from their bins! And wheelie bins STILL lying from the storm 2 weeks ago! Fly tipping and dog shit!

I am sickened and was actually going to chap doors and ask of anyone was willing to join together for a community clean up! But then am I really going to bother when these people let it lie right outside their house, MEANWHILE moaning about rats!

I feel your pain,I pick up litter outside our building/carpark because I don't want to live in a tip and I'm not a mink.

Maybe I will shame them in a way by asking!
