Cover letter for job application on Indeed

I'm applying for a job through Indeed. CV all up to date & I'm happy with it. It says cover letter is optional. I don't want to do one but feel as though I have to. If you don't know the name of the person you're addressing it to, what's the done thing? Ring & find out, or just address it as "Dear Sir/Madam"? This sounds very old fashioned, I haven't applied for a new job in years, so I'm probably stuck in the dark ages.

Dear Recruitment Manager
To whom it may concern

I'd steer away from Sir/Madam

It's always a good idea to attach one, and if done right it makes you seem more of a person rather than a number! How about 'Dear Hiring Manager'? (I work in HR but for a very informal industry so won't suggest the kind of introductions we normally see! 😂)

Another vote for ‘Dear hiring manager’.

It's for a finance assistant in a care home. I doubt they would have a large hr department. I should have mentioned this and I would be reporting to the finance manager.
Your tips sound good, thank you for those. And thanks for steering me away from Sir/Madam. This was widely used once, back in the dark ages.

So do I go for Finance Manager or Hiring Manager

Oooh tbh if it's as small as a care home, I'd call actually and try and get the name. Maybe have a chat with whoever you get through to if they're happy to, about working there as they may well mention the call to someone (and then your name will be 'on the map' as it were!) Or stalk their LinkedIn (or get someone else to!)

If not, I'd stick with Hiring Manager.
