Parking with two scruffy diagrams (sorry)

Hi!

I'm just interested in some opinions please.

Diagram one is of my street. People park on the pavement outside my house, opposite the drives of people over the road, and the neighbour seems to be able to get out okay. There are no walls or hedges.

However diagram 2 shows at MILs house. The diagram shows cars parked on the on the road. The road itself is a similar width, so in fairness there is a bit less space on the road, but more on the pavement.

Yet the entrance to MIL's drive is flanked by walls and there are manual gates. There is much less margin for error in entering or exiting, and you have to enter or exit at such an angle that you have to be further out into the road, iyswim. As a consequence, it's really, really hard to exit and enter.

DH said that when he was a kid the pavement on the far side wasn't there, so the cars were closer to the far wall.

I have suggested MIL puts one of those little signs that says please don't park here, but it's not my place to push it. I can't get the car in or out and I have to leave it to dh.

Are those cars within their rights to park there? Would you put a sign up? Ripping the wall down isn't really an option.

there are no parking restrictions.

you should speak to the council first before putting up any signs.

There's no reason why the cars shouldn't park across the road from your mils house unless there's double yellow lines there.
I wouldn't put up a sign as it will be ignored and could cause issues with her neighbours

In a previous house, the council (not us) painted white lines opposite the driveways for this reason... cars were blocked into the driveways with a vehicle opposite, especially when cars parked on both sides of the road

The cars on your street may be illegally parked.

Good diagrams @AnotherDayAnotherIdea. I would start with your council.

Thanks all, the council is a good idea, particularly as MIL is elderly.
