Squid games and 10/11 year olds

Blendedperfectly25 · 02/02/2025 07:49

My DD is year 6, she comes home every day talking about squid games because her whole class are obsessed.

she then asked if she could watch it, I had never watched it so I put on episode 1 last night just for me to watch to see if it was suitable.

I am shocked at how many 10 year olds are watching this ? I know today I will have the debate with daughter who claim life is so unfair and she won’t fit in if she doesn’t watch it.

anyone else let their 10 year olds watch it ?

@wonderingwhatlifemeans

In my view it is not appropriate for schools to be dictating to parents what their DC can and can’t watch.

Also, out of curiosity, do you feel the same about porn?

yeriknow · 02/02/2025 16:04

My 8 year old has mentioned it but I'm not aware that his peers are watching it.

A few of them, are, however, watching STRANGER THINGS.

Does anybody think Stranger Things is appropriate for 8 year olds?

I think it's far too scary / gory. I also thought a bit part of the appeal was the 80s nostalgia, which obviously will go right over their heads.

Wildywondrous · 02/02/2025 16:06

I don't know of any that age who have watched the whole series but lots of them have seen clips of it on YouTube and Tiktok.

Lilliea · 02/02/2025 16:10

I dunno. I got a call from my son's school saying he told them he watched venom and deadpool with me. I haven't even seen either of those films and his teacher updated me that he confessed to saying he'd watched them because he 'just wants to watch them so badly'. No idea how he knows what they are. He's 6!

LoveMySushi · 02/02/2025 16:12

DD is 8 and watched the red light green light clip on youtube at her friends house! She had nightmares for weeks.

edwardcullensotherwoman · 02/02/2025 16:13

The problem with Squid Game is that it’s all over social media, and it got people talking, so it’s possible that her friends haven’t actually watched it, but have seen or heard things from it.
Our primary banned any of the games (red light, green light, etc) from being played in the yard after season 1 came out, which is quite sad as they are actually playground games. My DD was in Y6 at the time, and it transpired that the kids who ‘knew’ all about it hadn’t actually watched it, but they’d seen clips on instagram/tiktok (whole other issue with 10 and 11 year olds!)

We watched with the 16yo DS, but would never have allowed the younger ones to watch.

Ultra75 · 02/02/2025 16:13

Yeah definitely a thing. My DS is in year 5 and some of his friends have seen it. Mind you, they have also been talking about Alien and the new one Alien Romulus.

Oioisavaloy27 · 02/02/2025 16:14

Sometimes children say all their mates have watched it or all their mates have the latest iPhone when in fact it might just be the odd one or two and they are trying to guilt trip you into giving them what they want by saying that.

I’m not sure what ‘killing’ has to do with it. Unless they are incredibly sheltered or have SEN, 12 year olds know that people get killed. By 12, I would expect that the majority can differentiate between a TV show and real life.

Squid Game is not an 18 in any event, so can’t contain a very high level of violence or gore.

My God!! I spent half the time watching season 2 with my eyes shut, It’s incredibly gory. You one of those cool mums who let their kids watch anything? 🤨

ST is also a 15 so obviously not.

However, like I said, I found it a lot tamer so probably from 11 up would be ok for a child that enjoys that kind of stuff.

moleeye · 02/02/2025 16:25

My Y5 10 year old and Y1 6 year old want to watch it - it's the talk of the school apparently

Absolutely no way!

I thought I was pretty relaxed about letting them watch the 12A Marvel films.

Not a chance they'll be watching it anytime soon

As others have said, just let them watch the game show version. They can definitely get the main jist of it through that.

Sux2buthen · 02/02/2025 16:29

Loads in my sons year (year 5) are watching it. My son doesn't want to, he's just telling me because he's surprised.

Personally I don’t believe that arbitrary age ratings are the needy way to determine what content DC should be consuming. Parents are best placed as they know how intelligent and mature DC are and how likely they are to be affected by particular content.

I don’t believe in sheltering DC unnecessarily and imo they should actually be encouraged to watch high-quality TV shows. This requires a level of concentration, understanding and focus that TikTok or kids cartoons doesn’t provide.

Game of Thrones is a case in point. Clearly it contains violence but I don’t see that a bright and mature 13 year old is going to turn into an axe murderer by watching it.

Superhansrantowindsor · 02/02/2025 20:22

I actually find it quite sad that people don’t want to police what their young dc are watching more closely.

liveandlearn73628 · 02/02/2025 20:24

This generation of weak parents who can't say no to their kids. Just say no.

CouchSpud · 02/02/2025 20:26

Absolutely not! I’ve only just given my 15yr old the freedom to watch this.

PheasantPluckers · 02/02/2025 20:27

Are they really watching it? There are a lots of Squid Games inspired things (like the red light/green light game on Roblox), people dressing up as characters and memes etc. doing the rounds that don't really show what goes on in the actual programme at the moment. I'm sceptical these kids have watched the TV programme.

user2848502016 · 02/02/2025 20:32

My DD is 10 in year 5 and kids in her class have been playing it too! No way will she be watching it though

Biffbaff · 02/02/2025 20:35

It's Squid GAME not Games. And it's inappropriate for pre-teens.

Shoxfordian · 02/02/2025 20:38

They're probably not all actually allowed to watch it

Threeandahalf · 02/02/2025 20:50

My nephew is 9 and he has watched stranger things and squid games

Bizarre parenting.

I know for a fact some of these kids do.

FuzzyPenguin · 02/02/2025 20:55

My DS10 has not and will not be watching it, however he does play a none gory version of it in Roblox along with a lot of his friends and can hold a conversation about which games can be played in the squid games as he knows from that, which I suppose could make people think he has watched the show.

We have let him watch the game show version which again is gore free and no worse than I’m a celeb.

Rewis · 02/02/2025 20:57

When the first series came out I learned about the show from my 11-12yo scout kids. Some had clearly watched it, few kinda pretended to know about it and about half thankfully didn't really know anything. To be fair I've had to contact the parents of 2 kids because they show really fucked up videos to other kids. He promised to never show them in scouts again. So basically now they show it after the meeting is finished.
