Barclays glitch

hugsandpugs · 01/02/2025 20:50

Someone I know said that they heard from someone else that Barclays is giving compensation to customers for current glitch.

Apparently you can go and withdraw £250 cash even if you have no money in your account and no overdraft. 🧐

Am I right in thinking that this is obviously a glitch and the people who have done this will obviously have to pay the £250 back when the Barclays systems are up and running properly?

My arguement is if it was compensation they would put it straight in your account and send some sort of email/notification that they were doing so. Also £250 for each customer sounds a lot considering how many people bank with them!

I haven't heard this but I cant believe for a second that Barclays are potentially giving every customer £250 with no requirement for it to be paid back!

Where do you go to get the £250?

I can’t quite believe it either tbh! Seems a bit odd.

Apparently just a normal cash point 🤷‍♀️

That won't be compensation but might be related to their current systems issues (ie unable to check balances so dispensing funds regardless). But you will see these as having been withdrawn on your next statement.

shellyleppard · 01/02/2025 22:41

Knowing Barclays it will take ages for them to sort out any compensation...... they are terrible

FTHC · 01/02/2025 22:46

I googled and first result said

Barclays confirms if bank customers hit by online and mobile app going down will get compensation
THOUSANDS of Barclays customers could receive compensation after a huge service outage left them unable to access their accounts on payday

But it was The Sun so I'm not clicking it for full details. Can't see any other reports of this.

That is absolute bollocks. There's a small chance it's an aspect of the glitch and a much larger one it's something some dick head on social media has completely made up.

Doggymummar · 01/02/2025 22:59

They said they will pay costs, not pay compensation

Nottodaysatanugh · 01/02/2025 23:20

It’s more than likely that when the glitch is over and the bank catches up that these people who are withdrawing this cash will become overdrawn in an unexpected overdraft and/or have the money removed from their account.

justasking111 · 01/02/2025 23:24

Must have been an issue for those facing fines because HMRC weren't paid in time.

justasking111 · 01/02/2025 23:27

My vehicle tax went through thankfully.

SisterEvangelinasSherryLog · 01/02/2025 23:32

I'm with Barclays and glitches are quite common, usually they sorted fairly quickly so £250 is quite a lot, that said of course if someone has had their paycheque messed with, they could lose quite a bit in the meantime .

I've been searching for ages and finally found somthing related to whats been going on near me

Earlier on today I went to the local spar shop. Took some money out

But infront of me there was a group of about 6/7 people all in the process of withdrawing 250

as a joke I said leave some in there for me And they let me go first

i over heared
Some of them say its the second time they have used and now they had 500...

Anyway I used the cash machine took out 20.

And they asked why I didn't take out 250
I said what do you mean ,?

why are you asking me about taking money out
Going to try rob me are you ?.

They proceeded to tell me how there's a glitch with barclays and everybody's balance is showing 0.... but you can withdraw 250 x2

And it still shows as a 0 balance

I thought u lucky sh1ts.
I'm with tsb...

Then I thought to myself how gutted I was
Then realised that. In a few days all these people are going to be repaying 250+ Along with how ever many people are affected

I just hope it ain't coming from other people's accounts like pensions savings etc

I am with Barclays and have been hit with the issues of not being able to access any funds.
This is partually true-you can go and withdraw cash without it being immediately debited from the balance-in fact all debit card transactions are on a serious lag-no transactions I made yesterday have frozen the amount as spent in my account. I was also able to withdraw cash that was not debited until about 10 hours afterwards.

People will absolutely have it debited eventually. Ive kept a running total in notes of my spending so I know I have the funds to cover. Massive pain in the arse on Friday/Saturday AM when I couldn't even buy milk with hundreds sat in my account, but aside from transaction lag it seems to be slowly getting back to normal.

I have seen people on social media withdrawing from £0 balances hundreds and spending up to £1000 in debit card transactions. I imagine CIFAS markers will be incoming if the funds were never there.

Baneofmyexistence · 02/02/2025 07:23

Lots of people can’t withdraw with their barclays debit card so it’s absolute rubbish. It’s just online banking is way behind in updating balances. I was able to use my debit card yesterday luckily but none of the transactions have shown up yet and the balance hasn’t updated. I’m just hoping the mortgage payment goes through as normal tomorrow!

Spurber · 02/02/2025 07:45

You would be absolutely foolish to take advantage and withdraw money you don't have

Sadly in the current financial climate, I think people are desperate enough to chance their arm. I have taken cash out but always had the funds in the bank to cover the withdrawal. But after Friday's fiasco, I will be keeping emergency cash at home.

Lovelydovey · 02/02/2025 08:05

Barclays will no doubt compensate costs incurred - but they absolutely will not be paying compensation via free money from an ATM.

CranfordScones · 02/02/2025 09:51

It may be that you can withdraw £250 and it won't show a change in your balance. But that just means the balance hasn't been updated because of the glitch. Barclays won't give compensation without a fight. But we can all rest assured that lessons will be learned moving forward...

Honourspren · 02/02/2025 13:05

Barclays may have caught on to that now. Guy before me in the queue in the supermarket was unable to withdraw any cash via cashback, even though simply paying by card was no issue.

MelisandeLongfield · 02/02/2025 13:29

Anyone thinking of exploiting this error might be advised to read this article.

https://www.itv.com/news/2015-12-17/no-such-thing-as-free-money-how-atm-faults-can-mean-breaking-the-law

People spreading the word that Barclays are doing this to compensate people are either very naive or it's so, if there are repercussions, they can point to the misinformation they have themselves spread as a justification for their actions.

There is no way a bank would 'compensate' people in a random way like this, it is laughable.

They'll look at any redress on a case by case basis - probably a standard, modest amount for general inconvenience and anything else based on the impact of what's actually happened and any actual financial losses people might have incurred.

KimberleyClark · 02/02/2025 13:31

My mobile app seems to be working fine.

I seem to recall something like this happened in America and the people that took out large sums of money were left with huge debts .. funnily enough.

Amaranthasweetandfair · 02/02/2025 13:44

They'll have to pay it back when the balances update. And they'll probably be charged for it too if they've gone into unauthorised overdraft. You can't just take money that isn't yours.
