I very stupidly got bleach on some black joggers. Is it possibly to dye them back to black?
I’ve never dyed any clothes but these are so so comfy I can’t bear to throw them out and they are no longer available buy
So AIBU in trying to dye them? Is this stupid?

Absolutely, just get a Dylon from B&M and chuck it in the wash with them.

JollyViper · 01/02/2025 17:42

Dylon is around £4 in home bargains about £8 most other places it might not cover the bleached area (and bleach can weaken the structure of the fabric, especially if a large area ) Dylon advice

Results with dye can be variable but could be worth a try - you might not get the exactly the same 'shade' of black on the dyed area as on the original fabric

Thank you! Never heard of Dylan so I will give it a try.
does anyone know if I need to treat the stain before treating it?

As long as it's been washed between the bleaching and the dying I think that's all you can do.
If it doesn't work could you do some visible mending? ( Check Instagram or YouTube)
You dill need to clean you washing machine really well afterwards including the seal to make sure you don't have any residual dye left over
Dylon also do a washing liquid to keep dark colours dark (£8ish) that's great for keeping your darks looking good (but won't dye your joggers)
Rit dye is another brand that works well on synthetic material

Full instructions are included in the dye pack. Check what fabric your joggers are made of before you buy clothes dye. Dylon is designed for natural fibres. There are dyes for synthetic fibres available.

I use dylon to refresh dark colours all the time and they work really well.

Don't try to patch or mend, just use Dylon washing machine dye.
I've used this loads of times with faded but otherwise good condition black jeans.
However, make sure you wipe out round the door seal after, and do a hot (empty) wash after with a touch of bleach to clean the dye out of the machine. Then make sure your first regular wash after is a dark one and not a white one.

If it’s fairly small spots, I’ve found indelible ink markers quite useful. You can often colour match quite well with slightly different inks from different brands. I’ve had mixed results with machine dye, because the bleach can alter the structure and absorbency of the fibres.

MellersSmellers · 01/02/2025 18:01

P.s. I'm assuming those joggers are cotton! I don't think the dye would take on synthetics

rwalker · 01/02/2025 18:10

Odd dot of colour loss I use a black permanent marker

You’ve already ruined them so what have you got to lose?! Go for it
