H&S incident at nursery

Today, our DD nursery rang to tell of an incident what had happened. For the last 3 days they have been having a new roof. One of the workers today fell through the roof, taking out a ceiling panel. Luckily nothing fell and luckily the children and him were ok but it could have been very bad. Would you report this to ofsted or somewhere else as I don’t think they should be working on a roof when there is children below. The owner of the roofing company apparently was devastated and said this does happen but he’s really sorry it’s happen in a nursery

Nope I wouldn't report at all. It was an accident and no children were hurt

NeverDropYourMooncup · 31/01/2025 17:31

Nope. Poor bloke.

Overthebow · 31/01/2025 17:31

I would want to make sure the work wasn’t continuing when the nursery is open. The roofing company has admitted it does happen. It has happened and it could happen again. Where’s the risk assessment taking this into account?

ZippyPeer · 31/01/2025 17:31

The nursery aren't at fault here, the roofing company is.

ExtraOnions · 31/01/2025 17:32

What do you think OFSTED will do ?

Kneeslikethese · 31/01/2025 17:32

No of course not.

TallNeckedGiraffe · 31/01/2025 17:33

Was a risk assessment carried out? Who engaged the roofing contractors?

Anon1274 · 31/01/2025 17:33

I don’t see how the school is at fault here so I’m not sure what you want to achieve by reporting it to ofsted. The teachers aren’t responsible for risk assessing the roof or the builders methods, and the builders haven’t deliberately put themselves in harms way

Fastingandhungry · 31/01/2025 17:33

No, I’d leave it to the contractor and nursery to sort out.

WeeOrcadian · 31/01/2025 17:33

I'm not sure what you think OFSTED will do, this isn't an education issue

Bigfellabamboo · 31/01/2025 17:34

No, likely the incident already reporting to HSE anyway.

Barrenfieldoffucks · 31/01/2025 17:34

Of course not! What an odd leap to make.

JLou08 · 31/01/2025 17:34

I would report it. If they were aware that it could happen they should have looked at closing the nursery whilst it was done or finding alternative premises.

PrincessAnne5Eva · 31/01/2025 17:34

The HSE.

CrestWhite · 31/01/2025 17:35

Not the schools fault.

The owner of the roofing company's attitude to what can be a fatal injury to his staff is appalling. Falling through a roof isn't something to accept as something "that does happen" with rigorous safety measures. Falling from height is the most common workplace death in the UK.

Onlyvisiting · 31/01/2025 17:35

No.

Nickay · 31/01/2025 17:37

The company will need to report the incident to HSE under RIDDOR

SoupDragon · 31/01/2025 17:37

I don’t think they should be working on a roof when there is children below.

Would you prefer them to shut leaving you with no childcare?

IdaGlossop · 31/01/2025 17:39

The nursery must feel terrible, as well as the builder. The nursery has acted responsibly by ringing to inform you and being open about what has happened. It could have been very bad - but it wasn't. This is of no interest to Ofsted.

PeloMom · 31/01/2025 17:40

It should be reported but not to ofsted. If the roofing company knew this happens the nursery should have been asked to close while the works are carried out. If the nursery refused, they’re at fault.

mitogoshigg · 31/01/2025 17:40

It's not an ofsted matter it's a hse matter and it sounds like it's been reported, that's why parents are being properly informed. Leave it to the authorities to deal with not for you to get involved.

The alternative would be to close the nursery for the time the work took, something that most parents would really struggle with. Accidents happen and the hse will check everything was done properly

NoodleDoodle97 · 31/01/2025 17:41

Ok my DD came out very shaken. Someone has said they shouldn’t be working with children underneath and that the manager is prioritising money over safety.

NoodleDoodle97 · 31/01/2025 17:42

Ok maybe not ofsted. I just wasn’t sure of who it should be reported to. If anyone

OP posts:
boulevardofbrokendreamss · 31/01/2025 17:45

No one. Leave it for the nursery to deal with.

quaversimpson · 31/01/2025 17:48

Tbh they’ll prob tell ofsted anyway
