Are there any Maths whizzes around who could help me with these algebra questions?

Does
2x(7+3x) [I have put "x" in bold to make it clearer that it is not x)
equal
2x x 7 + 2x x 3x
and then equal
14x + 6x2 [ie 6xsquared)

And does
6x + 12x2 [ie 12xsquared]
equal
6x x 1 + 6x + 2x
and then equal
6x(1 + 2x)

Thank you!
(If you could explain why that would be amazing!)

I used to be able to do these in my head. Not sure the bayeux tapestry would be big enough these days.

Both look correct to me
unsure how to explain why… especially as you’ve already broken down the steps yourself

CruCru · 31/01/2025 13:36

You are correct both times.

Yes, both correct- you multiply what's inside the brackets by the figure before.

You have a typo in the second one, second-last line, a + that should be x near the end, but it does just look like a typo. What are you unsure about? It looks as though you've got it!

CruCru · 31/01/2025 13:40

For the first problem, treat each of the terms inside the brackets separately. 2x times 7 equals 14x. Then 2x times 3x is equal to 2 times 3 (6) times x squared.

For the second problem both terms are a multiple of 6x. So it is easier to take the 6x out and put the brackets in. This gives you the 1 and then the 2x.

Please excuse my handwriting.
