To be astounded by the audacity...

(Lighthearted... ish)

AIBU to be astounded by the audacity of someone who would arrive at your home for a visit and ask to put their adult sized soaking wet football boots in your brand new tumble dryer?

And equally, if not more, astounded by the idiocy of the DH who said 'yes, sure, what's the worst that could happen'?

As I scrub dried mud off the drum and pick out dozens of tiny pieces of rubber this morning so that I can put my baby's clothes in there to dry, I don't think I am UR, but prepared to be told otherwise.

As is almost always the case you have a dh problem.
He should have put the shoes in a pillow case to tumble them dry.

Datafan55 · 31/01/2025 09:07

Either that person or your DH should be cleaning up the mess!

Narcissisticflipflop · 31/01/2025 09:10

Your dh sounds a bit dim tbh

This. Stop treating husband like a young child.

cheddercherry · 31/01/2025 09:11

More astounded you’re the one cleaning up after it today tbh!

Mostunexpected · 31/01/2025 09:19

Obviously it's DH that should be cleaning it up, but if OP has done a wash and needs to dry the clothes what's she supposed to do? Leave them soaking until her DH gets home from work in possibly 8-9 hours time?

But DH was there at the time and presumably the guest didn’t leave barefoot before the shoes dried? So why couldn’t her husband have cleaned immediately after/ before work and not left it until this morning?

Screamingabdabz · 31/01/2025 09:23

DH’s responsibility 100%. Why are you taking ownership of it? That’s when the domestic creep sets in and all of sudden you’ve gone from an independent career woman to a 1950s drudge. ‘Oy DH, your mate’s boots have wrecked the washing machine, can you sort it out? Thanks love.’

TheVeryAudacity · 31/01/2025 09:26

To be fair he is very apologetic and absolutely would clean it but he's at work and I want to use the dryer.

TheVeryAudacity · 31/01/2025 09:27

@cheddercherry They didn't arrive wearing the football boots, they arrived having played football beforehand. They were going home, where they also have a dryer, afterwards.

You are right to be furious. Tumble driers are not for shoes far less mucky football boots.

Then it’s a baffling choice to let them use the dryer but if as you’d said husband was equally mortified by the mess made and apologetic then I wouldn’t be too mad about it at all. It happens.

I’d be raging if he’d left it to me to sort (as the OP suggested) and didn’t seem to bother about you cleaning it up with baby, but clearly he just didn’t think it would leave such a mess. In Mumsnet standards I think you’re doing alright in the husband department if this is the pinnacle 😂

Hdjdb42 · 31/01/2025 09:41

Eww why did.your husband think that was.okay? Did he not realise the mud doesn't dissappear!!!

Simply didn't think at all presumably. Was told they were clean just wet, didn't question that in order to get wet they'd been worn outside...

I would never in my life have thought of putting football boots in a tumble drier in the first place .
Tumble driers are comparatively expensive to run so I think it was the height of cheek for a visitor to your home to suggest using it for their benefit in the first place.
Absolutely strange thing to ask to do and even stranger for your DH to allow it.

Springflowersmakeforbetterhours · 31/01/2025 11:16

Bet the boots didn't fair much better.. Bonkers..

pinkyredrose · 31/01/2025 11:18

Is he dim?

TheChosenTwo · 31/01/2025 11:20

Tumble drying football boots? I’ve never done this! Surely they just either air dry out the back door or get stuffed with newspaper or something like that?
Madness, can’t imagine the boots are in a particularly good way either!
I do tumble dry on low heat regular bog standard trainers maybe one pair every couple of years (not a regular occurrence!) but it’s mad to think to do it to football boots 😂

SpringBunnyHopHop · 31/01/2025 11:21

I would rage 😂

xILikeJamx · 31/01/2025 11:22

Not really helpful to OP, but I bought this off of ebay for our kids football boots that were forever soaking wet and ended up smelling like rotting turnips. Fixed to the wall in the garage and it's been a godsend!

latetothefisting · 31/01/2025 11:49

cant you stick the hoover in it to suck up the tiny pieces of rubber and dried mud rather than picking them out individually?

Well, that's DSIL's next birthday present sorted Wink
