I’ve just started lemon balm tincture and I’m not sure if it’s a placebo affect or if it really works, but I am definitely less on edge and a bit more zen. Twice a day, 9 drops mixed in a little water. Not to take if you are hypothyroid though but good if you are hyperthyroid and safe for everyone else.

St John’s wort is a definite one. Alternatively go to a naturopath and they will have access to a bunch of stronger Chinese formulations. Some can be taken together with hormone balancing supplements

NormaleKartoffeln · 31/01/2025 05:56

Actual evidence for the effectiveness of most herbal medicines is questionable. Some might have a placebo effect.
Perhaps best speak to your GP for ways of managing the anxiety or even an actual medication. Anxiety is horrible and I hope you get the support you need.

I like St John's Wart. It calms me and it's not addictive. I can still work. The doctors needs were too strong for me and I felt I could not work with them.

Mermaidsarereal · 31/01/2025 06:09

I've started taking magnesium for the past few days, I've had really bad anxiety for weeks which is affecting every aspect of my life. A lot of people recommended it to me so I'm giving it a try. Also going to try and contact the doctors today as I've had no luck getting in touch with them for the past few days!

Nutricalm, works quite quickly for me. Since being peri I get days where I feel anxious or overwhelmed for no reason and these are brilliant for that.

Cookingdoesntgettougher · 31/01/2025 06:42

If you are taking medication look for interactions. I know St John Wort can affect drugs.

SleepyHippy3 · 31/01/2025 06:53

OP, maybe you have some vitamin and mineral deficiencies? What has helped me with anxiety are magnesium, omega 3, vitamin B complex, vitamin C and vitamin D.

I know you’re asking about herbal remedies so please ignore me if this is not what you’re looking for but I find propranolol an absolute game changer for anxiety. It obviously doesn’t treat the root causes of anxiety but helps so so much with the physical symptoms e.g. racing heart, sweaty hands, breathlessness. It’s a POM so you’d only be able to get it if it was suitable for you/didn’t interact with any others meds you’re px

I bought Woman Essence, an Australian bush flower remedy for my DD – who "doesn't believe in all that stuff" – but after a week of taking it said it actually seemed to be helping. Personally I take a herb called Motherwort, in a tincture and find it really helps calm me down.

In addition to herbal remedies, if you have anxiety, keeping sugar and caffeine low is always a good idea too.

I'm afraid I agree.

That hasn't stopped me trying ashwaghanda tablets and St John's Wort though. And I'm on this thread for more recs!!!

I'm looking for something to take the edge off generally. I don't think I'd "qualify" for GP tablets.

Seriously OP what really works for me is regular exercise, in particular yoga but you could do whatever you enjoy as long as it's regular.

I know I am having a bad patch because I've been off my regular schedule.

Exercise, decent diet (treats are fine as long as in addition to and not instead of healthier foods), a hobby which relaxes you, a hobby which invigorates you, and also speaking to your GP if things get too much for you.

Hope you can get back on track with schedule soon. 😬

L-theanine helps for calming nerves. I'm on anti-anxiety medication, but i also take L-theanine with it (I take half the recommended dose, rather than the full amount).

If you use st.Johns wort, use a high factor suncream, as in rare instances it can cause photosensitivity.

Trixiefirecracker · 31/01/2025 08:45

I use Kalms if I feel I’m getting a bit twitchy but it’s no good if I don’t catch it early enough. I feel it can take the edge off though and also CBD gummies.

I've never tried these. Have debated.

Not quite the answer are looking for but less caffeine , alcohol, salt & upfs
More water & sleep
Ask Dr for a full blood test you could be lacking vitamins etc.

WashableVelvet · 31/01/2025 13:01

I find valerian helpful, it takes the edge off the racing mind which also helps me sleep if I’m otherwise too anxious. But sometimes what I need is propranolol, which not everyone likes but is magical for me dealing with menopause anxiety. The hrt helps, but I often need this on top.

NoCarbsForMe · 31/01/2025 17:13

Saffron

FatArse123 · 31/01/2025 17:17

Passiflora from Holland and Barrett. Also Valerian, but if anything that is too effective, it seems to make me fuzzy.
