6 year old with vocal tic - driving me mad!

My 6 year old DS has a vocal tic at the moment - it’s a very high pitched squeak , usually followed by throat clearing. It’s constant and it’s driving me insane. I know he can’t help it, but I struggle with repetitive noise anyway (waiting for my own ADHD diagnosis).
I believe he has autism, maybe ADHD but he’s on the waiting list.

Is there anything that can be done? I’m terrified this will be constant for years and that he possibly has Tourette’s or something.
My brother has Tics (he still has them as an adult) but they’re more movement ones - head and eye twitching/rolling so I’m assuming it’s partly genetic.
I’m trying him with magnesium supplements- he had the first one tonight, as I’ve heard that can help.

It says lack of sleep can make them worse, his sleep has always been terrible, despite a consistent bedtime routine. He wakes up early, struggles to settle at night, wakes up and comes into our bed. He’s always been the same.

Much screen time?

It will most likely pass, probably on to something just as annoying, but a change is as good as a rest!

I have tics. I'd say don't draw attention to it, you don't want your son to feel embaressed or as if he has to try and suppress it. For me, being stressed makes tics worse so it's counter productive anyway.

Oh I sympathise OP! I find repetitive noises very difficult to cope with. Especially when you don’t know when the repetition will stop! I am also on a waiting list for ADHD assessment.

My DS is diagnosed with ADHD (yes the unbelievably common story of undiagnosed 40 something woman whose story clicks into place when her son is diagnosed with ADHD…)

He unfortunately has a tendency to repetitive noises (but it won’t be the same thing each time)

I just have to ask him very nicely to stop each time!

I think I had a tendency to vocal tics as a child, but my mother was quite brutal in her ways of telling me to stop so don’t do that! I remember once I had a tic of a hiss and my Mum called me “hissing Satan”!

My 2 autistic sons have gone through many tics. They don't last forever. My older son did a loud OH!! High pitched. My younger does a screech. They pass. Best not draw too much attention to them

Has he had a blood test? And been tested for various nutrients deficiencies?
Always rule out physical reasons first.
It's also worth doing this as Tourettes is only diagnosed after a year of consistent ticks (and other criteria) so having a note on his file is useful

Autistic DD occasionally has motor ticks, they come on when she's very stressed / under the weather they stay a while and then disappear as soon as they occur.

No blood tests yet. Haven’t even taken him to the doctors. I will if they continue. However he’s had a couple of tics before so I know what they are - but this high pitched one is very irritating.
As I said in my OP my brother also has them, even as an adult.
