To report NSPCC child line?

Every Thursday after I take DD to her swimming lesson, and after her lesson I take her to WHSmiths for a magazine as a treat then walk home. Every single week I am HOUNDED by the NSPCC to set up a direct debit.
Now I am not charity shy and I donate to certain causes each month but I don't expect to be hounded. Today (6th week in a row) they cornered me and actually stood in front of the shop door making it hard to leave. They practically cornered me and my pre school aged child. I said to them that I do not want to commit to setting up a direct debit. They then probed and said 'why?' I said because it's not something I'm looking for. These two men then said 'well why not, you're helping children!' I said again, I don't want to set up a direct debit. I may think about an online one time donation. But that wasn't enough. He then said 'well you can afford it, you come in here every week and buy your daughter a magazine so you can set up a direct debit!' I then snapped and said 'no, my finances are fucked, I can't afford it, now please get out of my way!' (My finances are not fucked, I was just trying to think of something to get them to piss off!)

He then winced and put his hands up to his ears and said 'don't swear in front of your child.' And tried to guilt trip me! They didn't intimidate me but I can absolutely see how they would an elderly person or a vulnerable person. WIBU to complain about them? They've really annoyed me!

Sorry to be clear? The NSPCC has a stall set up in WHSmiths door way.

WaneyEdge · 30/01/2025 18:14

I would report. They should take no for an answer. I’d possibly contact the manager of WH Smith too.

Dfg15 · 30/01/2025 18:15

Yes, report them. So sick of these charities trying to intimidate people into giving.

TimeForTeaAndG · 30/01/2025 18:15

I'd complain to WHSmith as well. They surely have to approve the stall being in their doorway.

Comff · 30/01/2025 18:16

They sound awful!

Katemax82 · 30/01/2025 18:17

Absolutely report them! That's revolting behaviour and they're lucky you haven't screamed at them sooner

rubyslippers · 30/01/2025 18:17

Absolutely report to fundraising regulator and NSPCC
they are likely not to be directly employed by the charity but through canvassing companies
they are probably paid on commission - hence their pushiness
their behaviour is absolutely out of order and the company need fo be held to account for their poor training and recruitment

AfricanGreen · 30/01/2025 18:17

Total harrassment

MaltipooMama · 30/01/2025 18:19

That's utter harassment and they should absolutely be reported. Also I agree with the pp about complaining to WHSmiths as well!

XenoBitch · 30/01/2025 18:19

They wont be employed by NSPCC. They will be trying to sign you up to a different charity a week later.
Complain anyway. Chuggers piss me off so much.
I would love to hear some good comebacks for their usual comments. I get "you look friendly"... and I say "no, I am not!".

JandamiHash · 30/01/2025 18:21

Report!!

When are these awful people going to be banned?!
I had one try and block me in an airport once (NSPCC as well) as I was hurrying to the gate as it had taken an age to get through security. I complained

Gansy · 30/01/2025 18:22

They work on commission. I’d report to WHS and let them know how their customers are being treated.

I’ve had similar behaviour from charities soliciting at my own door.

Midnightlove · 30/01/2025 18:24

I would just shove past them.. they're total parasites. I give to charity as and when I want, and certainly won't be signing up for direct debits!

UrsulasHerbBag · 30/01/2025 18:25

Agree with others report. How dare they do that to you? Really aggressive and unnecessary.

404ErrorCode · 30/01/2025 18:27

Urgh. Awful, OP.

These people are (most likely)on commission, and will try any emotional blackmail tactic they can think of under the guise of charity. It is coercion, and unacceptable. How many give their details and money when they really don’t want to?

I had a similar experience with some that came to my door, they actually tried to invite themselves in my home.

Report them, definitely

WallaceinAnderland · 30/01/2025 18:28

Can't you just ask them to move out of the way and leave?

AlbertCamusflage · 30/01/2025 18:29

I would ask them what fundraising agency they work for, then report them to the agency, and report the agency to both NSPCC and the Fundraising Regulator.

The chuggers earn a commission, then the fundraising agency front-slices a chunk from any donations they sign up, and the charity itself starts to benefit ONLY if the direct debit stays in place long enough to cover the agency's fee.

Not that that lets NSPCC off the hook. They must/should know what's going on.

PizzaPunk · 30/01/2025 18:32

Yes I'd report them.

And in future, do not converse with them.

"No" is all you need to say and if they stand in your way, "Let me pass".

CocoapuffPuff · 30/01/2025 18:33

I'm always uber polite to chuggers if they persist. I don't sign up. I meet them fire with fire.

How much of your salary that you're earning doing this, are YOU donating?

Why aren't you doing it for free?

Shameful. That's shameful. You should be doing it for nothing. Surely the children are important to you?

Why are you taking money from the charity? How can you live with yourself, etc etc.

They usually tell ME to fuck off!

ZoeRuby · 30/01/2025 18:33

You should 100% report them. If you can, find out who the Head of Individual Giving is at then NSPCC and complain directly to them (shouldn’t be difficult to find out on google/linkedin). I would also report them to the Fundraising Regulator.

I am Head of Fundraising for a charity (which incidentally doesn’t do this kind of street fundraising) and this kind of behaviour is bad practise and unacceptable.

Oh really? I didn't know they weren't employed! I've just done some reading and your comment supports what I've read. They are 'self employed' and tend to work with multiple 'charities.'

Will be sending an email to WHSmiths and NSPCC this evening!

TinyGingerCat · 30/01/2025 18:36

I always say "I don't give to charities that employ chuggers" and most of the time that does the trick as they never seem to have a come back.

WallaceinAnderland · 30/01/2025 18:28

Can't you just ask them to move out of the way and leave?

Why should I when I said 'no' 3 times. Is that not enough? No means no.

OP posts:
andHelenknowsimmiserablenow · 30/01/2025 18:37

I think the only way to avoid this is to be rude and completely ignore them and give them no eye contact whatsoever. Just walk around them if they stand in front of you, don't engage.
