To be annoyed he took my parcel in

BurnoutGP · 30/01/2025 13:26

My neighbour is a pilot. He works away A LOT. For example I took a parcel in for him before xmas. He only came to get it last week. A huge box that Sat in my hall all over Xmas. I rung a few times to give it to him but not in.
I ordered a pair of new shoes on sale. Specifically for a weekend away (last weekend). They "delivered " when I was in the house. No knock or bell heard.
I got a failed delivery/redelivery notice. Then a few hours later when I was out a delivered to neighbour notice.
I rung as soon as I got back as we were going away that weekend. No answer. He has a ring doorbell so knows I have been ringing. Every sodding day 2 or 3 times.
I know he's not there his car is gone.
He is sometimes away for weeks.
Why on earth did he accept it knowing he would be away. Or not drop it round before he went. I would have rather he didn't take it, I would have had more chance of getting them.
I am so annoyed. I just want my sodding shoes .

We got a large secure post box. It's solved a lot of problems like this and/or trips to sorting office across town.

Ours will hold a shoe box or two.

Postman thinks it's great and that everyone should have one.

Intrigued!
Do you give the postie a code for the box? And if so, what about delivery drivers from other companies?
If not, how is it secured or is it case of it being a dry and concealed place for a parcel rather on the doorstep for all to see.
I would be interested in a link if you have one - TIA

modernshmodern · 30/01/2025 17:57

I'd take it back to the company and say you didn't recieve them

Reugny · 30/01/2025 18:05

If you never gave the courier any delivery instructions then you need to contact the retailer and say they weren't delivered as legally they weren't.

You are allowed to fight both the retailer and courier on this, and it is easier if you ordered them on a decent credit card as you can go to your credit card issuer if they shop refuses to refund you. (Even if it is below the limit sometimes they will still investigate.)

Also in future if you have a nearby parcel shop and have an idea you may not be in when they deliver a parcel, pay the extra and get them delivered there.

It’s possible the courier put him on the spot before it could register he was going away or maybe he waited for you for as long as he could but his job comes first and he had to leave.

I’m not staying home because my neighbour can’t be home to get their own deliveries.

But she was at home. They just delivered to
neighbour

If you want it not to happen again you can put a message in the address field when you order like this.

My Name,
16 My Street Name,
Please leave parcel behind bins/gate,
My City,
My postcode.

I've been doing this for years and it always works.

They ignore it half the time and deliver to neighbours anyway … so frustrating!

CarnivorousHipPain · 03/02/2025 16:35

I don't know what company it was, but you could try asking them to put a note that you don't want any attempts to deliver to neighbours.

One of the downsides of shopping online.

Could have been flowers sent from a friend who walked into a florist, homemade cake sent from mum, still all delivered the same so irrelevant really.

Crocsake · 03/02/2025 17:11

Could you leave a message for him on the doorbell. If you ring it and he doesn’t answer, try saying “hi John, you have my parcel and it’s urgent. Please call me on 0123456678 to let me know when someone will be home”.

But the situation the OP finds herself in is still one of the downsides of shopping online.

DazzlingCuckoos · 03/02/2025 17:16

When he's back I'd suggest asking him either not to take them in in the future, or letting you have a spare key so you can collect them and keep an eye on the place while he's away!

I suspect he's had a brain fart moment as I'd like to think someone wouldn't be quite so stupid to accept a parcel delivery for a neighbour just before they went away for a few weeks!

Is it definitely with him? Can you see the evidence on the delivery info? I'd be concerned that the courier didn't try your house, despite you being in, then has said it was delivered to the "neighbour" and disappears back into their van...

Cherrysoup · 03/02/2025 17:18

When he’s back, ask him to not take parcels in given he’s away so much, that’s ridiculous of him. Could he not pass them to another neighbour as I would were I going away?

godmum56 · 03/02/2025 17:19

purplecorkheart · 30/01/2025 14:24

Unless you gave permission for them to deliver to a neighbor then I would contact the shop and say that you have not received them and ask them to send another pair or refund you. They can follow it up with the courier company,

For all you know your neighbor could have put them on your doorstep before he left and they were taken.

This. You have not got the shoes you ordered. Your contract is with the seller of shoes. Go back to them and say you have no shoes.

This.

I've refused to take in a parcel from a courier as I was going away. The courier was rude when I refused, so I told him that he needs to do his job properly and deliver to the actual address on the parcel not a neighbour.

One of my elderly neighbours, when a courier attempted to deliver one of my parcels to them, actually went with the courier to get him to ring my bell. That neighbour used to run a pub. 😃

flower858 · 03/02/2025 17:56

As a military wife firstly they won't register the logistics but also you can write and edit your delivery or put on your door please don't deliver to x house and they won't. Most main parcel companies you can pre set a thing for your preferences. Or get a parcel box. And just because you rang if he was away doesn't mean they will see it as often in a no signal area when flying.

Good luck with the big sign. I have a HUGE sign on my door that says that I am disabled, please give me time to get to the door, do not dump parcels on the ground as I can't pick them up. Want to know how many people can read these days? Most deliverers - except for EVRI, who generally get such a bad rep - dump the parcels on the ground and leg it without even knocking or ringing the doorbell!

You shouldn't have to, but can you put a table / rack outside your door so you don't have to bend down ?

Manthide · 04/02/2025 20:11

Years ago we had a desktop computer that broke down under warranty. They collected it and we waited for it to be returned (early days of internet). After a certain time we called them and they said it had been returned. We had had no card but they said it'd been left with a neighbour - who just after went away on a cruise! I still can't understand why she didn't just give us a knock. We don't talk anymore - not because of that.

Miaminmoo · 04/02/2025 21:05

You’re not being unreasonable at all. I don’t take parcels in for anyone except my neighbour over the road (and he’s retired so it hardly ever happens) as I once took one for another neighbour and she was banging my door down at 7am and was so bloody rude and had a massive go at me for taking it in - even though she had been at work and we had been at home the whole of the previous evening so she could have got it same day. She was such a horrible bitch I vowed to never accept another parcel for anyone.

Pherian · 05/02/2025 12:56

It’s annoying, but in the future just amend the delivery instructions and specify not to leave it with certain house numbers.

BoldAmberDuck · 05/02/2025 22:19

tropicalroses · 30/01/2025 14:08

Why are you ringing on his door bell if you know he's not there?

Even if he knows your ringing because its a ring door bell, what do you expect him to do currently if he isn't there?

Ring doorbell can be answered remotely, from anywhere that has internet signal

aei22 · 05/02/2025 22:57

Neighbour was foolish to take it in and then bugger off away.

SugarandSpiceandAllThingsNaice · 05/02/2025 23:01

This is kind of on you. I am sure he doesn’t want to be taking in your packages either.

You can set delivery preferences where you tell them to put a package in a safe space or attempt delivery another day, or drop at a collection point and to NOT leave with a neighbour.

They will only leave a package with a neighbour if you have previously given them permission to do so.

Re-set your delivery preferences.

goingtotown · 05/02/2025 23:27

I don't take neighbours parcels in & I don't want neighbours to take my parcels in.
Too much hassle waiting for them to collect or watching to see when they're home from work.

DiscoBeat · 05/02/2025 23:31

Just update your preferences. Don't leave with neighbour.
