Struggling in new job

So we just had a big restructure and out of the blue I was told I was moving department. I hate my new job because I don't know anything. The existing team members are all working overtime as there is so much to do. I've tried to be pro active but they seem reluctant to let me do anything other than some very menial simplistic things. The manager is quite young and very inexperienced it's her first time being a manager. I took a sick day today and probably tomorrow as I'm just very down hearted. I miss my old job which I had only been in for 2 years but was just starting to get the hang of and was feeling productive and experienced. I know it will take time but... I've tried to be proactive but the other people on the team seem to think it's easier to just do the work themselves thank show me. The manager is brand new and doesn't have much of a clue about anything. She tells me to ask questions but when I do she doesn't get back to me for days. Feeling very switched off and down

It's very poor management to force you to move departments and then not train you. How do they expect to motivate and keep staff happy by treating them that way?!

Can you go above your line manager?

It could be that the department is so busy that no one has time to train you right now. Seems so pointless to have put you in a role you're unfamiliar with, in a department that needs help, but no one will train you.

I understand why you're feeling low and unmotivated. Do you think, with training, that you might enjoy this new role eventually? If not, I might consider looking for a job elsewhere.

Thanks for replying @MrsJHernandez It's frustrating as there is a vacant post in my old department but they are not allowed to fill it as there is a recruitment freeze at the moment. I guess in time I'll find out /learn what I need to know . It just feels very hard at the moment. I feel knocked back every time I ask a question . But yes I am looking around for something else.

A lot of the difficulties I've experienced in this place can be put down to poor management tbh

@spanieleyes22

Why did they move you to a different department and then advertise a vacancy in your old one? Is the vacancy specifically for your previous role? I'd question it, if it is.

I hear ya regarding poor management. I left my last job for that reason. It was so poor in fact, that I was paid compensation!

If your'e older do you think this whole thing might be a way to get you to resign?

@MrsJHernandez No they moved me and then someone left from my old department so I thought great I'll just apply for that role but they can't replace that person as there is a recruitment freeze though it would make sense to have me there as they are snowed under with work that I know how to do. Makes no sense🙈

@SaltyPig I don't think so as there is another young girl who has been moved with me from another department. She has been off sick since we started though which is odd. I don't think she wanted to move either. Maybe she is sick but it seems a bit suspicious id say she might be off with stress . But I know it's none of my business. Can't help noticing it though.

If it took two years to start to get the hang of your old job it must be quite a high level complicated post so give yourself a break it might take time.

spanieleyes22 · 30/01/2025 09:57

I suppose after a year I knew what I was doing though as people left and weren't replaced we all had to learn their roles and incorporate them so I have learnt a lot. It's a shame and frustrating that I can't use that knowledge. I suppose it's just a wait and see thing. It's annoying as I want to be good at my job but it feels I have to sit back a bit and be patient until I get to know what I'm doing. There's definitely a feeling that the team don't want me even though they are overworked. Even a fairly straightforward thing I overheard one of them saying she had to stay late to finish it and I said I could do that I know how to do it but no no they both said no thanks. So I was left twiddling my thumbs til home time and left on time whereas they both stayed late. Like what's the point of me

I guess nobody has any aside that I don't already know. Stick it out . I feel so put down like I should just shut up and be quiet. It's hard for me not to want to do well though
