To be upset my promotion wasn't announced

I have been promoted to management at work, I found out it was happening in a meeting with my bosses and then a few days later my email signature changed without warning. It's not a huge change in responsibilities as I was already effectively managing before but without the title, although I've had a pay rise.

When others have been promoted it's been announced in meetings and people have been taken out for drinks after work, etc.

It's been two weeks now and there's been no announcement for me. People have noticed but not a single person has said well done or congratulations at work and I'm sad about it, but also wondering if there's a reason - it's sent me into a negative spiral of thoughts like am I actually shite and they've just given me this title so I'll stay, or does everyone just dislike me!

They also haven't changed my title on the company website yet so I've not felt able to tell anyone other than DP. DP bought me a well done card and I just burst into tears because it's been such a mountain for me and it feels like what should have been a huge achievement has turned into a huge blow to my confidence.

Am I being a bit pathetic? I haven't said anything at work as don't want to sound ungrateful or needy. It is bothering me though.

Congratulations, OP! You obviously aren't shite - there is no way they would have given you a pay rise and put into a management role if that were the case.

Is there an HR department at work? If so, it would probably be simplest to ask them why an announcement hasn't been made, and when the website will change.

Congratulations on your promotion, @sapphicy

How long ago was the promotion?
Does the company tend to make announcements immediately, or do they bank all achievements to announce at the end of the month?

I would approach your manager or whoever is responsible for this type of communication and just say lightheartedly 'where is my big announcement, then?'

I’d feel exactly the same as you if this happened to me, so don’t think you’re being being petty. It’s a great achievement and you’re well within your rights to want the accolades.

I agree with what a couple of others have said and would approach my direct management. My approach would be to confirm with my leader if it’s ok for me to go ahead and mention it to other internal/external people myself, in lieu of any official announcement.

Its professional, but also addresses the issue that it hasn’t really been addressed!

Congratulations! 🥳

Basically yes, maybe that's why nobody's bothered 😅

Were you interviewed? Did you apply? If not they are probably not announcing it as they should have opened it up to other applicants.

It all seems really weird and passive to me, why aren’t you telling your boss to put an email out, it’s not petty it’s a fact. So John how do I get my details updated on the system and can you let people know you’ve appointed me permanently.

Linux20 · 03/02/2025 15:44

I would raise it really casually like “am I ok to tell people or do I need to wait for a formal announcement?” Hopefully that will prompt some action. Maybe time your request for just before a meeting so they might say “ oh sorry yes, I’ll do it at the meeting later”

Classycollab · 03/02/2025 22:22

I would ask your direct line manager.. I’ve had this situation before and it’s due to my manager being shite at thinking this stuff isn’t important! I would just put in a 5min chat and check what the next steps are and if you can update LinkedIn as others have suggested. And if you are on good terms with the team bring some cakes and biscuits in for the next team meeting and say it’s to celebrate your promotion.
one thing I’ve learnt is that you can’t wait around for others to celebrate you, take the opportunity and celebrate yourself!
congratulations on the promotion!
the fact that you’ve been doing this job proves you deserve as much as if you were interviewed! 🥳

Emmz1510 · 04/02/2025 23:02

I don’t think it’s needy at all! People should be officially told when someone’s professional role changes, are your work not all that transparent when it comes to communicating information? Also, do you now have line management responsibility for folk? Shouldn’t they be told?
I would just say to whoever has responsibility for this ‘I haven’t been telling people about my new role because I wasn’t sure if it would be announced officially? I feel like it should so we’re all on the same page’.

Nationsss · 04/02/2025 23:13

Nothing petty about it at all.
Address it with your manager.
It needs correcting.

Congratulations on your promotion! Here I am one year later writing a similar post.

My role has been changed in the website, and I also got new direct reports but the email has not been sent. I am the exception and I feel devalued
