Unhappy with petsitter, would you rebook?

She is somebody I know through a friend and have met a few times before.
I know she is ND, but I have found this experience with her frustrating.
The first time I booked her for my pet i was happy with everything, she did leave a bit of a mess but I overlooked it.

However this time, well I looked back at my texts and I had made my instructions clear, however she totally misunderstood them and it caused a bit of stress before I'd even left for my holiday. Then she misunderstood another instruction.
My cat uses the litter tray and has never once toileted anywhere except the tray (or outside) even when I first got him.
I left adequate litter, bin bags etc. For my friend and as a petsitter she should surely know that litter needs cleaning often.

I've just come back and only one of the bags has been used, and my cat has left a nice present on my bed for me. I can't 100% say this is the friend's fault, however my cat has never done this before even when we've gone away, and when I got back both trays were unclean.
It may be the stress, however I wasn't away for that long and my cat has never once done this even when I first got him, I keep on top of the litter cleaning.

Next, my friend was meant to visit twice a day for a max of 1.5 hours, and it's close to her address. I'd told her she could help herself to drinks.
I've got home and all my pans and utensils have been washed and placed on the draining board. They were clean and placed in another part of the kitchen before I left so they've clearly been used.
I would have no issues with it but she didn't ask me and I didn't think she'd need to cook on short visits. She owns a flat much bigger than mine, it's not like she's in a houseshare or something.

I've paid her a decent rate for this, more than I earn per hour. Does it sound like I'm overreacting?
I won't be booking her next time, I'm shocked that she cooked meals here without asking and hasn't bothered to clean the litter properly. Should I say something?

Hmm nope I wouldn’t be happy.
I am a cat sitter. I am currently sitting with a cat cuddled up on my knee while I sit and watch some tv ( owner away quite a while so I’m spending longer than normal as cat is very petted) I have brought my own drink and snack and will take it with me when I go.
Litter trays and food bowls are cleaned every visit. Any tracked litter, puke etc is cleaned every visit. If cat is sick on bed then I wash the bedding.
On my last visit I deep clean trays, Hoover and mop floors and wet wash any kitchen surfaces/window ledges cats have been on. I also put out bins on the correct day, bring in post and open and close blinds so house is ‘lived in’.
Sometimes I live in. I bring M/s ready meals and any dishes used would be washed and put back where I get them.

I wasnt implying your pans were dirty. I was suggesting you rebuke her. You said in your first post that the trays were unclean, i meant you say to her. My pans didnt need cleaning but the trays did !
Personally I'd not trust her now to do a good job and wouldnt rebook

Sorry quoted the wrong one but yeah sorry I was agreeing with you, I was saying about her that my pans were not dirty so I'm not sure why she took it upon herself to do that.

Don't re Book. She'll get the idea as it's going to happen again probably and eventually she will ask or somebody will tell her.

Marinel · 29/01/2025 15:03

OP the fact is, she did not do the job you paid her for and your cat did not have a clean litter tray. You don't need to listen to her excuses, just don't ask her to pet sit again and find someone who will do the job properly.

The pans were not dirty, I rarely use them, they were not left out dirty or anything like that, I havent used them for a while.

I didn't leave a single dirty dish or pan out, I wouldn't do that.
Re the cat litter she said she cleaned it, but I'm not sure.

You’d know if the litter had been changed as the amount in the bag would be less-
Plus the state of the tray/s
Were they urine soaked? Strong smelling?
A litter tray shouldn’t have any odour if it’s cleaned properly and replenished.

Yeah, the litter sack was as heavy as when I left it. The cat was alone for about 11 hours and had used both trays plus had a number 2 on my bed, as I say that has never once happened before.

That shows the cat was stressed, I’d say and the trays had both been used-

Cats can be funny about who looks after them-

But a poo on a place like your bed shows cat was seriously stressed out.

Spongebob35 · 29/01/2025 15:14

True, I thought my cat would be ok as my friend has looked after him before and he sat on her lap etc.

I do pet sitting and pop in visits which is what it sounds like you had and I would not be treating your home and pets like that

Jackiepumpkinhead · 29/01/2025 18:33

I’ve got through quite a few pet sitters, who were quite honestly; useless and lazy. I think some people do pet sitting thinking it’s a really easy job and give no thought to the pets they’ll be looking after. I’ve had sitters who have left my dogs for hours on end, not realising I have a ring doorbell, leaving my house absolutely filthy, locking themselves out and having to call a locksmith (expecting me to pay), not feeding the cat as they hadn’t listened to (or read) instructions of where the extra food was kept. I have a wonderful sitter now and they are worth their weight in gold. Definitely don’t rebook!
