To lie and say it gave me a reaction?

Treated myself to a manicure for the first time a few weeks ago at a local salon. Got chatting to the manicurist, as you do, and mentioned that I was having trouble with my skin - I have a very obvious skin condition which is mostly just cosmetic but does get me down as it's so noticeable and tends to flare up in cold weather.

Manicurist then starts talking about this brand she works for, how great the products are etc. I'm not 100% sure but I'm fairly sure it's one of those MLM type things which I have no interest in using or supporting but since I was a bit of a captive audience and felt awkward, when she asked if I'd be interested I said yes. Next time I went in she kindly save me a few samples to try and said she would get in touch to see how I got on with them.

I'm sure the products are just fine but they're probably expensive and like I say I have no interest in supporting what is (probably) an MLM, plus I've had this condition for a decade and it's not going away any time soon. Even prescription meds have not helped.

I KNOW I shouldn't have said yes in the first place but I want to keep going there and I don't want it to be awkward in the future if I turn down her products/business so should I just lie and say it gave me a reaction and I can't use it? I do feel a bit bad lying but I just don't see the point in wasting more money on things that don't work even if it's not an MLM!

Just say you’re on a specific treatment plan with the GP to get it under control so you don’t want to introduced anything else at the minute

JollyViper · 29/01/2025 12:02

Is it rosacea? You could tell her your on a low dose of antibiotics and you are under guidance from the GP.
Or just be honest and say you've changed your mind, but thank you.

internallyrebellious · 29/01/2025 17:45

@JollyViper no it's more like a psoriasis/eczema, which is why it's exacerbated by the cold 😞 I could say I've been given a topical steroid treatment though, I have had that in the past.

Also look up the link between gel nails and eczema. Lots of places do hema free now

RachelLikesTea · 29/01/2025 17:50

I have eczema and it is usually better if my nails are painted because the ends are not as sharp. I would just say you reacted to it, which you thought may happen as there are very few creams that you can use. That would be the truth in my case!

WinterMorn · 29/01/2025 17:52

Why lie? Just say it’s not for you. Stand up for yourself and stop being a people pleaser 🙂

This. It’s ridiculous how many posters on here twist themselves into knots unnecessarily when it was be far easier to tell the truth.

internallyrebellious · 29/01/2025 18:09

@RachelLikesTea yes I only have them painted as I hate the idea of fake nails and my own nails are quite good just looks nicer when painted all pretty!

Also true in my case! So many things give me a bad reaction so it's not reeeeally a lie..

I know I should stop people pleasing but it's the habit of a lifetime!

if it’s easier just say your skin is very sensitive and you wouldn’t be able to use the products again. That way it’s not something wrong with her products, but your skin.

BendingSpoons · 29/01/2025 18:15

Have you used the samples? If not, you could say you decided not to take the risk given past issues and does she want the unused samples back.

WinterMorn · 29/01/2025 18:25

Honestly OP, I used to be the same but it is SO liberating to tell people the truth! Also, there is no confusion further down the line.

Yes that's essentially what I thought, that way I'm sort of letting her down gently and not giving any offence!
