I feel so bad

Jamontoast123x · 29/01/2025 06:20

I was washing up and tidying the kitchen yesterday, my kids were playing in the front room when I heard a loud bang. My 18 month old had fallen off the sofa onto the corner of his toy box 😩 I ran in there obviously picked him up comforted him and he had a cut to the cheek and it was starting to bruise I iced it and gave him lots of cuddles etc and he was fine. Today he’s woken up and not only has the bruising got worse, he’s now got a black eye and it’s swollen . I feel so bad, this id a routine I do every night , the front room is literally feet away so it’s not like I can’t see them because I can (my house is tiny so it’s like 4/5 steps away to my front room) I’m now worrying incase I need to take him anywhere there gonna wonder why I didn’t take him last night and in case they get social services involved 😭 I love all my children and id never let any harm come to them intentionally it was just an accident but it honestly looks worse then it is . Has anyone had any experience with this? I’ll post a picture when it happened and then of now. Thank you so much in advance.

OP, please ask Mumsnet to remove the pictures of your child - this forum is way too public.

Crazycatlady79 · 29/01/2025 06:25

YABU: please ask for photos of your child to be removed.

You can't ever not get medical help because you're worried they'll call social services.

Unless there is a backstory then you need to rest easy in the knowledge that accidents happen all the time and a&e know that. Unless there are red flags about the type of injury you have nothing to worry about.

I'm not going to give medical advice as can't, but hope you are both ok.

Lightswitchup · 29/01/2025 06:27

OP don’t worry about social services, phone 111 and tell them what has happened and they will advise. Kids bang their heads all the time and it’s usually fine but they will tell you what to look out for anything of concern.

No that’s not why I didn’t take him it didn’t seem necessary but I’m worrying now if I have to take him somewhere for soenthing else they will wonder why I didn’t. No no red flags here at all never been under ss

How about you make an appointment with the GP for today and get him checked over.

Lightswitchup · 29/01/2025 06:29

OP you’re over thinking that, they won’t. Phone 111 and get advice

VotingForYourself · 29/01/2025 06:31

Get the photos of your kid off the internet. This isn't a private social media account.

And take him to see a GP or a nurse to check him over these things happen they do realise that.

Lightswitchup · 29/01/2025 06:31

Yes or GP as soon as open

Why isn't your priority getting help for your son? Why is it about the authorities.

He’s had a head injury, I’d get that checked out by your GP, or phone 111. Unless there have been other concerns social work aren’t going to be interested, kids fall all the time - it’s a bigger issue if you don’t get him medical care for fear they might contact services. Because if his age the health service might call social work, who might pop out to see you - it’s a routine visit for them and really nothing to worry about.

I've reported your first comment and said you want the post removed. x

Not sure why everyone’s getting so worked up about a photograph of a child.

It doesn’t look too bad to me @Jamontoast123x . These things happen a lot with toddlers!

Howinthehelldidthishappen · 29/01/2025 06:41

Your description made it sound far worse than the images. I don't think it's that bad at all.

Zippidydoodah · 29/01/2025 06:42

Accidents happen, op. Call 111 for advice. Explain that the bruising only came up this morning and you’re wondering if he needs to be seen. I expect that due to his age, they’ll send you in, but I wouldn’t worry about social services if you have no previous involvement.

BlueSilverCats · 29/01/2025 06:42

If it helps, DD gave herself a black eye the day before her 2 year HV check in a really stupid way too. HV just asked what happened, I told her (cringing) and nothing more was said and done.

whatcanthematterbe81 · 29/01/2025 06:43

Just so you know, my friend had social services called on them by the hospital because they delayed taking to hospital but then it was totally fine as they looked into it and obvs there was no signs of abuse or neglect.

greyandorange · 29/01/2025 06:45

I doubt even that will happen to be honest. I certainly haven’t taken mine to the hospital every time they’ve fallen or bumped their heads; I’d only do so if they were sick or seemed confused etc.

HopeMumsnet · 29/01/2025 06:45

Hi there,
Don't worry, we've removed your pics now, what a bonny lad. Hope you're all feeling a bit more settled this morning and good luck whatever you decide to do. x

nwsw · 29/01/2025 06:47

I've taken my son the hospital, called 111, been to the gp more times than I'd like because he's had a few bumps. Some in my care and some not in my care (nursery). Every time I've been mortified and worried about being on some kind of watch list for how often he's been. But I care more making sure he's ok than whether or not get asked a few difficult questions.

That said every medical professional has reassured me that some children, usually boys, are just accident prone and often the injuries he's being correctly checked out for are clearly very innocent and consistent with a boisterous child.

Always get medical advice for head injuries. You didn't see this happen.

Strawber · 29/01/2025 06:51

Don't know if this reassured you or not but I'm a social worker and also have two very young children in nursery. Both of them usually have a new bruise somewhere I'm always paranoid about it because sometimes I don't know how they got a bruise because they are both so active and play together but nursery ask me every single time like they are judging me but it's normal.

Delayed medical treatment can be a worry however your explanation is also plausible. You don't need to seek medical attention if they seemed fine after the fall however overnight it appears worse. Ring your GP today to reassure yourself

Actually they often do for injuries to young children needing medical attention, but it's usually a routine check in and nothing to worry about. OP if that happens, it would likely just be a call to check in and is very common. As long as there's no background here then it really is nothing to worry about. Go get your son checked out.

That’s not an answer - it was literally a photograph of a child! Children are everywhere.
