Error on Cv and now have an interview, do I come clean before?

Before I start, this was a genuine error and I’m glad I caught it now.

I applied for a position in the nhs and got an interview.
upon reviewing my application in preparation for the interview, I noticed I put a C for maths when I have a D!

im mortified!
the job doesn’t explicitly say you need a maths gcse however I’m aware NHS jobs ask for your certificates.

I have a degree and experience in all areas of the job role which is why I presume they want to interview me.
i also deal with numbers and budgeting on a daily basis so more than capable but just crap at exams when I was in school!!!

do I email them and admit my error?

Don’t panic - for staff who don’t have gcse maths and English, there is an NHS literacy and numeracy test that staff can sit, so at worst you’d just need to take that as part of your induction if you got the job. Whatever you do, don’t lie and hope not to get found out. Just say you made a typo but that’s not a reflection of literacy and numeracy skills overall!

I work in the NHS as a recruiter there is no literacy test any more! For all post staff must have as a minimum level 4 GCSE, functional skills level 2 or the equivalent qualification if from overseas. The OP just needs to come clean. I’d suggest she undertakes functional skills level 2 as the vast majority of employers expect these as a minimum!

I’ve had a reply straight away from them saying it doesn’t effect my application and they are looking forward to meeting me at my interview!

Shocked!

Aah that’s great OP good luck with your interview.

But you need GCSE Maths OR EQUIVALENT to get a place on a degree. So what other maths qualifications do you have?

No you don't, I have a GCSE D in maths and studied a medical degree where they never once asked about my GCSEs results.

College did but I just did a 1 day training class and quiz to show I could do the math, its not a certificate or recognized qualification it was just proof of being capable for the colleges records.

RockOrAHardplace · 28/01/2025 19:57

I would drop the recruiter an email now and just say in reviewing the application, you realise there is a typo you had not spotted, explain what and then add that you also have a degree .

Apologise and say you are looking forward to the interview.

I use to work in the NHS, I interviewed and I would be fine about that unless the job stated you had to have specific grades, but I would also deem that anyone with a degree must have basic mathematical skills noi matter what the degree is in.

They are only human, and best to confess beforehand and it should be fine.

Good Luck!

ThinWomansBrain · 28/01/2025 19:57

how old are you?
not being agist, but if you're in your 20s and not a great deal of work experience, the grade you achieved is probably more relevant than if you have a few decades of experience.

Qualified accountant with a CSE grade 2 in maths 😁
My cse's and o levels dropped off of my CV a long while ago.

pimplebum · 28/01/2025 19:58

Take a fresh copy with correction to interview

at my last interview my documents were processed by a secretary at the top of the day , maybe you could tell them there was a typo and swap over documents, if not hand fresh copy at end of interview

good luck

Might make a difference if you want to go on to do additional qualifications in your new role. A friend wanted to start a nursing apprenticeship (had been in an HCA role). They were keen for her to do it but she had to do a functional skills qualification in maths first as she didn't have the right GCSE grade.

Good luck with the interview.

Petitepetite · 28/01/2025 18:08

Yes it is. A lot of jobs expect the minimum of 5 GCSEs grades A-C. A Level courses usually require students to retake their maths and English if they didn't get a C or above. Might've been different in the past though.

That isn’t the same as it being a fail though.

RoastDinnerSmellsNice · 28/01/2025 20:07

Was the CV typed OP, I'm assuming it was, so just tell them that after sending it in, you realised you made a typo, 'c' is literally diagonally below 'd' on the keyboard, so assuming you weren't trying to pull a fast one, and have now chickened out, it's likely that that is exactly what it was.

Good luck OP. You will feel so much better going in to the interview with this straightened out.

AdoraBell · 28/01/2025 20:11

Definitely tell them about the error, if not it could cause serious ramifications.

mrstrickland · 28/01/2025 20:12

I have worked in the NHS for many years, had many interviews and other than my relevant degree have never been asked to prove school grades. Really not a big deal at all.

mswales · 28/01/2025 20:18

If you've got a degree and work experience I would take GCSEs off your CV. Usually it's only if you're still young and don't have much experience that they would be there.

RIPVPROG · 28/01/2025 20:19

I know what grades I got at GCSE but have no idea where the certificates are (parents' loft?!) , I do have the certificates for both of my degrees, MSc and professional qualifications.
I think entry level jobs are keener to see lower level qualifications, I've never been asked for my GCSE certificates, private or public sector, but I know our admin are asked to prove Maths and English GCSE C or above (or equivalent).

Interestingly my aunt who was a maths teacher for many years including head of department etc, applied for a part time SEN carer type role after she retired and had to sit maths GCSE! She went to university as a mature student in her twenties via an access course and has a first class engineering degree, she had to take English GCSE to do her PGCE but given the standard of maths expected for engineering degree didn't have to do Maths GCSE, until after she'd taught the curriculum and exam for 30+ years and wanted a part time retirement job! She really struggled to find somewhere that would let her just pay to sit the exam, most wanted her to study/do a year of lessons in the course she'd just stopped teaching.

justasmalltownmum · 28/01/2025 20:20

I would come clean - if j was offered the job

coxesorangepippin · 28/01/2025 20:23

No one cares

They don't even read CVs anymore

I just don't ever believe this when people claim they don't know what GCSE's they got and/or have lost them. At the point you sit your GCSE's they are your first real qualification and results day is a big deal, results are discussed loads and school impress upon you the need to keep these documents safe as they are important?!
Maths and English in particular everyone drives home how important they are... Bullshit do people 'forget what they got' in their gcse maths 😂

I genuinely can’t and I’m in my 30’s 🤗

FlamingoQueen · 28/01/2025 20:30

Good luck x

werideatdawnn · 28/01/2025 20:31

If it’s not specified, why all the fuss??

PlasticineKing · 28/01/2025 20:34

With kindness, how old are you? If I were employing a fresh graduate I might be keen to see certificates. But for stuff like this it’s an element of trust. And for me (in a vocational field, third sector) I’d be far more interested in clear PVG/DBS and good references.

Iwiicit · 28/01/2025 20:36

I'm not saying you aren't genuine but if you told me that, I would be inclined to very much doubt what you say.

Mugcake · 28/01/2025 20:49

Don't mention it. If it doesn't say anything about GCSE's in the job advert then I wouldn't worry. You ARE educated A level and above. Not many people can remember everything they learned in their maths GCSE so unless it's essential to the role just leave it
