I found a thread on this title but it wasn't able to be commented on so I've made a new one

What are people's reasons for staying in a hostile on the holiday do you do it because it's cheap when you can't afford a hotel

Mostly yes. It can be a fun way of meeting new people but overall it's because of cost.

PerkyOchrePeer · 27/01/2025 16:28

If I was desperate to be somewhere and couldn't afford a hotel I don't think I'd go on the holiday I'd rather stay at home and save up the money until I could afford a hotel

Depends on your circumstances and the hostel. There are some very good ones, but I wouldn't take under 16's to them due to possible abuse issues. But then, due to childhood abuse I was a rather over-protective parent.

Hostel/Hostile/Hospital?

Hostel/Hostile/Hospital?

Surely you realised that was a typo not a Freudian slip?

Lyn348 · 27/01/2025 16:31

When I've travelled solo youth hostels have been a cheap option and a good way to meet others. It's not clear to me what you hated about the hostel. If you didn't like making breakfast with others in a shared kitchen then why didn't you just go out to a cafe?

Edited

Well, quite. If money wasn't an issue then I assume hostels wouldn't exist! It's cheap for a reason.

Many people make the decision to just travel and stay in hotels (and only go when they can afford to!) But some (mostly younger travellers on gap years/uni students) are happy to stay in budget accommodation in order to travel.

PerkyOchrePeer · 27/01/2025 16:34

I usually go to an Ibis hotel and they're not the most expensive and they're really good value for money and then nice and our clean and the staff are friendly

Have booked a family room when the kids were younger, so five of us in one room. Great value and good fun for the kids. We’ve also stayed in the youth hostel in St Moritz in Switzerland on a cycling holiday and that was rather special.

PerkyOchrePeer · 27/01/2025 16:35

I went travelling solo to two places in Australia and in both places I stayed at an Ibis

It’s like anything else people do differently on their holidays. Some people love an all-inclusive resort; some people love a luxury hotel; some people love to wild camp; some people love to hostel-jump. Some people love to do all of these depending on where they’re going and what they’re feeling like; some people would never do anything but their one preference.

If you’re a solo traveller or group of friends who see your holiday as more of an adventure to see new places and meet new people, hostels can be great. They’re affordable if you only intend to use your accommodation for sleeping and showering, and you meet lots of likeminded people who you might be able to link up with for tours or your next destination.

Shouldbedoing · 27/01/2025 16:37

Hostels are great if you're doing outdoor activities because they tend to come with a drying room for waterproofs and bike sheds etc

Ablondiebutagoody · 27/01/2025 16:42

I liked them when I was younger and travelling. Cheap, cheerful, fun in the evening, potential to meet hot foreign guys.

I'm old now and can't deal with the head torches and rustling carrier bags(in the dorms) but still occasionally use the refuge type ones in the mountains because nothing else is available that high up.

VimesandhisCardboardBoots · 27/01/2025 16:46

Depends on the type of trip. I decided to take a couple of days in London in December and couldn't find a hotel that wasn't absolutely extortionate.

I was pretty much only going to be in the room for sleeping so fought fuck it and got a hostel.

For a trip where I'm actually likely to want to relax, then no, I wouldn't use a hostel.

PerkyOchrePeer · 27/01/2025 16:47

Well as I said and ibis Hotel is not expensive and I would rather go to an Ibis. Some people go to quite at market hotels where there's a good restaurant a bar a pool and a gym

Stated in a shared room with friends, was fine. Not keen on the shared bathrooms in the corridor but a good cheap option

PerkyOchrePeer · 27/01/2025 16:54

Some people don't even stay in a hotel because they like an air b and b

OP posts:
pizzaHeart · 27/01/2025 16:56

we stayed a couple of times in family rooms when we just needed a bed for the night and it was the closest plus cheap option available. It’s absolutely fine. I wouldn’t stay for a week though and of course I would rather stag in a 5 star hotel but it’s expensive.

@PerkyOchrePeer what supermarket do you shop if you don’t mind me asking?

Turbottimes · 27/01/2025 16:57

Lots of good rural hostels in stunning locations.
cheap
you get a family en suite so no sharing with strangers.
They have kitchen facilities. Handy if you don’t like unhealthy eating out options or picky kids.
airB&Bs are killing rural communities and are morally wrong.

shellyleppard · 27/01/2025 16:59

I have stayed in q youth hostel when my children were smaller..... really enjoyed it. Got an ensuite family room. Breakfast at the hostel then lunch out. Lovely place, nice bar/restaurant and we all made lot's of friends

midgetastic · 27/01/2025 17:00

Advantages

cheap and cheerful

they have a kitchen so you can do your own food

much friendlier than a hotel

Sone fantastic locations

Often community based Independent hostels rather than corporate giants

CreepySquareBrackets · 27/01/2025 17:00

The private rooms with ensuite are brilliant for families.

We typically will use one in the lake district a couple of times a year.

The locations are excellent, with fully equipped kitchens, we love being able to have a hot chocolate bomb after a brisk walk on our first evening. The breakfast is excellent value for money. We can make up pack lunches, fill up flasks etc to take out on our hikes.

A simular arrangement, staying in a hotel, buying lunches, hot drinks etc would cost double.

There's no really downside.

Before I answer why do you need to know which supermarket I shop at what's that got to do with this
