AIBU to think "treats" for school classes which hit a fundraising target is not acceptable?

We have a great school and a great PTA and people do give generously throughout the year.

However, the latest fundraiser has come with a target for each class, and those classes which hit the target will get a "treat". To hit the target requires everyone to give over £10 on average.

I know some people get motivated behind a target, but I think this really just opens up inequalities.

AIBU to think this is not acceptable, that the PTA shouldn't have come up with such a divisive idea and that the headteacher shouldn't be facilitating it (targets, progress and treats are being actively discussed in assemblies).

Especially if you have two, three or even more children in the school!

Exactly this. I think it's awful. Our school's PTA go quite hard on fundraising, too hard for me. I think it puts pressure under so many parents and shows a lack of empathy for those who can't give a tenner or whatever without it impacting the house or family things.

I think there needs to be recognition of how many people are struggling, now more than ever.

Ours is a small school though and I don't know how to raise it without outing myself as being skint - which I shouldn't have to do!

My daughters school have asked each child to raise £25. No particular event, how they do it is up to them, but essentially it’s asking family to sponsor them to do something of their choice. It’s slightly ridiculous as obviously it’s ask parents and grandparents. No proper event, just each student expected to give the school £25 - they don’t even have to share their fund raising.

Mine too! They haven't specified an amount but the obligation is there, with lots of reminders and an opportunity to undertake it at school, eg a sponsored run around the field, which highlights it more.

I just can't afford it and it makes me feel crap. My DC were easily talked out of it last time but now it's come around again : 🙄

My DS's school had an ill considered sponsored event where children who raised more than a certain amount got a prize. There were three prize levels for different targets. Nothing at all simply for joining in and trying your best though. The school is in a very deprived area. Around 1/3 of the pupils are on FSM. What a way to isolate those who can effectively buy the top prize from those who don't have the means. The event ended up being cancelled.

When schools are not getting enough off the government to get by what do you expect then to do? It's quite sad really that schools have to fundraise for equipment.

It's not about that. It's about promising children a prize for raising the most.
To one family donating £100 could be change from their pockets. To another family donating £1 meant a child sacrificed having their once a week treat from Poundland.
But who gets the prize ? Not the child that gave a quid.
That's what is wrong in this case.

DS's school do it that the class that buy the most raffle tickets (no minimum target) get a prize (was pizza for lunch when his class won). This didn't seem too bad, it provided a little incentive to maybe buy one or more two than I otherwise would've but he wasn't too fussed as knew only one class could win and everyone else was doing the same.
