AIBU?

.....to think the 'too fat to toddle' programme is hardly a 'shocking documentary', but just plain common sense?

I have just watched some of this programme and was that these parents seemed unaware their dcs were obese. I am being unreasonable to think that surely these people must realise that their kids have put on weight, especially when they can't fit clothes in their sizes and the legs etc are too long???

Perkinwarbeck, your DD sounds just like mine. She also likes to sit and be read to rather than to bomb around like some babies.

I am also realising that the advice from HVs about very young children self-regulating given the right environment is wrong. We also eat very healthily and my DD has literally never seen crisps, chips, biscuits, ice cream, fizzy drinks, squash, even juice for heaven's sake - she does not know fruit juice exists! Her idea of a treat is a tangerine. Despite this mega healthy food environment I can see that I will have to make extra efforts on her behalf.

But then, that shouldn't surprise me. I have always struggled, as does my mum, as did my grandparents and theirs before them.

The guidance issue is interesting PW.
I spoke to our HV about this to ask for guidance on appropriate portion sizes because I felt like I was just making it up as I went along and there was the potential for me to be getting it completely wrong. She was as helpful as she could be an even spoke to a nutritionist on my behalf but the bottom line was that there is no clear guidance available as to how much a child of a certain age should be eating. She offered to refer us to the nutritionist but this seemed a bit OTT. Ds1 is slimming down a bit as he gets older and I decided to wait 6 months and then see how ie is doing.

The genes issue is also interesting. There has been lots in the media recently about "fat genes" but this programme emphasized the fact that it is food and lack of activity that makes you fat not your genes. The way that I look at it is that ds1's genes (and mine and dhs) make him really like eating and not like excercise, which means that we all have to work really hard to keep things in balance.
