have you been to see live theatre/opera/concert?

we are professional (classical) musicians, so think nothing of going to see an Opera, classical concert, live theatre etc.
However, I've recently had 2 conversations with a family member and a head teacher that they have never been to a live (classical type) concert or theatre show/play.

So it's making me wonder - how many people have been to..
a) an opera?
b) a live theatre production?
c) classical concert?

I was suprised that these two people hadn't been to any of these, but should I be? I don't know?
Thank you.

Yes, all three.

theatre and opera the most, a few musical concerts, very few musical theatre as it’s not something I really enjoy

soupyspoon · 26/01/2025 14:46

One opera, Madam Butterfly at the ROH, hated it, really cant connect with opera

Lots of theatre and other music shows, one tonight

A couple of classical concerts out of curiosity, not my bag.

OP have you ever been to

  • a football or rugby game?
  • a theme park?
  • a music festival?

Different people like different things so why the faux surprise that some people have not been to see concerts or theatre?

Edited

I agree.

It's completely fake surprise.

Different people enjoy different things.

Who knew 🙄

noworklifebalance · 26/01/2025 14:47

Go to loads, several times a year but mainly theatre and concerts, with and without DCs. We live near London so a huge amount of these types of events are readily accessible, if you have the money. Having said that, we know several families of similar (even higher) income in our locality and many rarely go.

@TheBoysAndTheBallet
Football game, yes, once, didn't enjoy it.
Theme park - loads.
Music festival - yes, once, didn't enjoy it.

But my point is, I tried them all at least once.

All 3 but I would add Ballet to the list. I would love to go to more but can't afford it.

thescandalwascontained · 26/01/2025 14:49

All 3 luckily

SparklingSpa · 26/01/2025 14:50

All of them, I’ve only been to one opera and didn’t like it. I like classical concerts, especially when I’m abroad as that’s are often really good value.

QueSyrahSyrah · 26/01/2025 14:50

I've been to many, many live theatre performances, from touring amateur productions at a University theatre to Broadway and everything in between.

I've also been to an Orchestra Christmas concert.

Never seen live Opera or Ballet.

Snowmanscarf · 26/01/2025 14:50

a) an opera? - no
b) a live theatre production? - several times
c) classical concert? - once

six666 · 26/01/2025 14:51

b and c many times.....

Floralnomad · 26/01/2025 14:53

We go to the theatre a lot and also to see Gilbert and Sullivan operettas . I’ve been to one Italian opera and it wasn’t for me . Never been to a classical concert or ballet as they don’t appeal to me at all . I do go to quite a few concerts / gigs . I’ve equally never been to a football match but I’ve enjoyed going to a rugby union international and do go to cricket . It takes all kinds of people to make up the world . I love cricket , I would not be surprised that lots of other people do not .

I was in our county orchestra when I was at school and I'm now wardrobe mistress at our local am-dram theatre so I've been on both sides of things there.

I haven't been to opera or ballet but more because they're rarer to be on near us but I go to RSNO shows in my nearest city when I can. Was just talking to DH yesterday as they're doing Pathétique next month so I'm thinking of going along. DC may come with me too, they've both been a few times and my youngest actually picked one of their shows for their 12th birthday a few years ago.

I love live theatre, both plays and musicals. I'm seeing Kinky Boots next month and Moulin Rouge later this year but our theatre is also putting on Lavender Hill Mob soon and then we're doing Calendar Girls after that. Again DH and I were talking about another play we want to go see later this year.

To balance it out though, I do have a range of interests and I also have a season ticket for our local football team and love watching rugby and motorsports too. I've also been to stuff like the Big Weekend (never a festival I've had to camp at though, camping isn't my thing) and I love gigs although they're getting really expensive now especially as we always have to travel and stay over when they're on.

I see your point (and have been to all 3 of your examples, along with 2 of the OP's examples) and I think the Opera and Classical concerts are probably quite niche but I think I'd be genuinely surprised to meet someone who had never been to a live theatre performance of any kind, not a pantomime or local am-dram or even a school play?

TheWonderhorse · 26/01/2025 14:57

I love the theatre and the kids are into musicals so we try to go as often as we can.

It's a lot of money, there are five of us, but I love having something we all like to do. I think theatre is so much more laid back now than it was, which helps. You don't need to dress up, which is nice, because we're not into that. We took ours to see Hamilton in December and my tiny 9 year old was offered a booster seat, the staff were really friendly and when you're lucky enough to live near the Wales Millennium Centre it's always a shame to not be in it. I look longingly at the what's on section of their website a lot 🤣

I'm not picky about what they want to do, but I want them to fall on love with something because life is better with passions 🙂.

KimberleyClark · 26/01/2025 14:58

All three.

Throughthebluebells · 26/01/2025 15:00

All three regularly, but probably go to C less often than A or B.

CrushingOnRubies · 26/01/2025 15:01

Been to many theatre productions

We counting Les mis as opera?

Jk987 · 26/01/2025 15:02

The thought of going to an opera fills me with dread, that's the truth.

Princessfluffy · 26/01/2025 15:03

I go to the theatre regularly but you'd have to pay me to go to the opera or to a classical music concert.

I love opera as a rule, but I don't like Butterfly either. I find it dull to the point of indifference, and the storyline excruciating. La Boheme is a much better Puccini, IMO.

DelphiniumBlue · 26/01/2025 15:05

Theatre including musical theatre - maybe 4 times a year
Ballet and other dance shows - once or twice a year
Opera -have only seen one
Classical concerts - have been to a handful, and sing with a choral group, have probably performed in more than I have attended as audience!
Theme park - not in the last 15years and wouldn't choose to ever go again
Football match - once ( Wembley international friendly) probably wouldn't go again
Rock/pop concerts - loads, from small pub gigs to stadiums.

Yes to all three, many times. I loathe sport of all kinds, but DH works in professional sport and I sometimes show my face. I find its popularity perennially mystifying. The way some people feel about opera (‘Why does it take the soprano ten minutes to sing two lines of text? Why doesn’t she just say it? Am I supposedly to believe that a solidly-built middle-aged woman is a consumptive, tiny-handed teenage seamstress?’) is my feeling about rugby.

I love music festivals, but don’t do the hardcore ‘brushing your teeth in cider and camping in two feet of mud’ any more.

crumblingschools · 26/01/2025 15:06

All 3 but mainly b

Wakeywake · 26/01/2025 15:06

All 3, but I prefer opera.
