A phased return, will I take a pay cut?

what happens with a phased return? Can I suggest it and if so would I take a pay cut or would the days I’m not working mean my sick paid allowance is taken to?

What are you envisaging this phased return to look like and over how long?

hit if you’re back working and not working your contracted hours then yes to pay cut

Coffeeguru81 · 26/01/2025 12:25

Actually sorry depends why
for some daft reason I assumed mat

this is sick leave?

Thesystemisbroken · 26/01/2025 12:26

Double check your policy. A phased return at my work is paid full time if complete within a certain amount of weeks.

QwestSprout · 26/01/2025 12:26

Depends where you work? A phased return here you'd be on full pay, it's just part of the sickness benefits.

ANiceBigCupOfTea · 26/01/2025 12:27

Depends on your company.
Mine do not deduct any money off on a phased return as it's a support action to get you back to work, but I work for a massive company. Smaller ones might differ

LIZS · 26/01/2025 12:27

Legally you are only entitled to pay for hours you work. Your employer may choose to top it up but doesn't have to.

Coffeeguru81 · 26/01/2025 12:30

If your sickness sign off has ended… then you will be expected to resume normal hours however you can negotiate a phased return but likely will go hand in hand with pay cut

thenewaveragebear1983 · 26/01/2025 12:33

I'm currently on one and I have used my annual leave to cover the hours I'm reducing, I've done this so that I don't have an additional 2 weeks counted as sickness (as already had had 4 weeks and only have 8 weeks at full pay). They would have paid me though if I'd chosen that option.

TrixieFatell · 26/01/2025 12:33

When I had a phased return following a period of long term sickness I was paid my full wage despite only working a percentage of my hours. My phased return was just over the period of a month and then I was back on my normal hours. Check your contract and sickness policies.

Edited to add, this was arranged through occy health, I had met with them when I knew I was returning to work.

hideawayforever · 26/01/2025 12:35

I got full time pay when I did phased return.

oldandknackerd · 26/01/2025 12:35

Do you get full company sick pay ? If so ask your gp to complete a fit note stating you are only fit to work reduced hours as part of a phased return

You weren’t automatically entitled to it

you negotiated it or it was offered

OddBoots · 26/01/2025 12:35

If you have been off a while you may have accrued leave that you may be able to factor in but it varies so much that it is worth asking for the policy before making suggestions.

This is what you had to do in my old company to qualify for full time pay. But agree with others it's company dependent really.

Verydemure · 26/01/2025 12:43

As pps experience shows- it depends on your company.

my employer gave me a phased return after Illness- no question about it being anything other than full time pay.

it was treated almost like sick leave- well enough to do part time, but not full time. It’s better for the employer that you come in and work what you can, rather than being off sick until you are 100%

HappyHolidai · 26/01/2025 12:44

I used my sick leave to cover the non-working hours on my phased return. When paid sick ran out then the non-working hours were unpaid. (They told me I would get SSP but then decided it didn't qualify)

lazyarse123 · 26/01/2025 12:49

I 've had two lots of phased return. First time I was paid in full, second I was only paid what I worked as the manager at the time didn' t like me and it was down to her discretion. She also didn't pay me when I had to wait for a covid result because it was negative but I didn't know that obviously until I got the result, stupid cow just another reason to hate her.
Sorry it's a sore point. I would ask your manager.

HamSandwichKiller · 26/01/2025 12:55

Phased return at my work would entail being paid for actual hours worked and annual leave to be taken for the rest.

hideawayforever · 26/01/2025 12:55

I was offered phased return, I didn't have to negotiate. I got full time pay.

Nice company!

bluebalou · 26/01/2025 13:06

A phased return where I work is over five weeks and paid as fulltime hours.

Bluecrumble · 26/01/2025 13:07

I had time off last year and my manager suggested a phased return plan (with full pay) during my return to work chat. I mainly worked my hours as I felt able to but I was assigned projects that were self contained so if I needed to leave suddenly I could also there just wasn’t that pressure on me to meet deadlines.
