To go for the cheaper car option? Peugeot 5008

Not really sure where to put this, so posting here for traffic.

we are due our third baby next month and I’ve done a lot of research on possible cars that will fit 3 car seats in.

I currently have a RR Evoque, but prices have dropped significantly. I can barely get £10k for it now, despite it being top of the range etc. obviously can’t fit our growing family in this car, so will have to cut our losses on this car!

we’ve been looking at a Peugeot 5008 or the Skoda Kodiaq, but the Kodiaq doesn’t have 3 full seats so a bit pointless.

there are two options on the Peugeot, and I’m struggling to decide which one would be best. We do have savings, but I really don’t want to spend an extra £10+k to exchange our car.

the first option is a 2021 5008 with 62k miles, but it’s manual and isn’t in that good condition (a dent, ripped seat etc). it’s a manual and I drive an automatic atm. Price is £13,000

the second option is a 2019 5008 GT (so nicer model) with 14k miles and looks good condition. Automatic with all mod cons. Price is £21,000

everyone is saying the second car is better, better model and mileage etc. but I just think the £8,000 could be used for better purposes. I will be on SMP only and don’t want to worry about money. I just don’t really want a manual but AIBU to opt for the cheaper option and take the ‘risk’!?

I’d probably get the cheaper one. Depends if you struggle with manuals or not though I guess. I have ankle issues so can’t drive a manual now. Otherwise I’d get the cheaper one, a nicer model is nice but not necessary. I bet you can get the ripped seat fixed cheaply. Even a dent wouldn’t bother me but there’s the possibility of getting it fixed?? Or live with it. Three kids will be expensive, save your money.

Rowen32 · 26/01/2025 13:52

I was researching similar but a lot of people seemed to have problems with 5008 which turned me off, did you look at any other car?

8weekscrossed · 26/01/2025 14:27

@SnarkSideOfLife thank you for the advice.

yes @Rowen32 i saw this too. I joined a group on Facebook and a lot of people are saying the 1.2’s are the problem, not the 1.6 which is the second option, but more expensive. I guess it’s like any car, pot luck if it’s a good one or not! What car did/will you end up going for?

Rowen32 · 26/01/2025 22:49

@8weekscrossed the Ford S Max comes up a lot.. I'm tempted to bring car seats to garages and find a 2.5 seater suv that will fit them as I know some people have luck if they get the right seat combination..

WilderHawthorn · 26/01/2025 23:05

We had a Renault grand scenic 7 seater for 3 DC. Never used the rear seats, it was just a huge boot. We now have a 5008 and love it, but having only paid £7k for the Renault, it gave us huge value for money. The 5008 is also good, but as it's becoming more popular with bigger families, we've noticed prices creeping up!

itsturtlesallthewaydown · 30/01/2025 21:34

We're also looking at the 5008 but concerned as there are lots of reports the 1.2 engines are unreliable due to having the timing belt inside the engine, and a high cost to replace.

Anyone with a 1.2 Puretech engine had good/bad experiences?

AllTheNaps · 30/01/2025 21:44

I had a Kodiaq then had #3 and it was pointless like you say as not 3 full seats and even with the 7 seats if one was to sit in the boot we couldn't utilise the boot space for a double buggy with 3 in car seats, gutted we had to get rid as the best car we had. Would work if all 3 aren't in car seats though.

I'd steer clear of the 5008 as I've heard poor feedback on them. Think your options for 3 full size seats are; Ford Galaxy, Ford Smax, Seat Alhambra, VW Touran, Renault Grand Scenic, Citroen Grand C4 spacetourer car wise.

In the end we went for a Vauxhall Combi Life which is more van like but same budget and it's massive and perfect for long days out as well as carrying an abundance of their belongings, shopping etc

I think all these cars are no longer made.

I'm a bit wary buying a car which is end of life due to replacements parts Availability etc.

The combi life does seem to be the main non-SUV for 3 kids, but it does look a bit like a potato 😆

coronafiona · 30/01/2025 22:28

Citroen c5 air cross has three proper seats in the back

RacingDriver · 30/01/2025 22:33

We had a 2019 1.6 Peugeot 5008 and it was great - definitely worth the extra money for the spec, automatic and bigger engine.

It’s been a great car, no issues and fit 3 in comfortably in full car seats. I’d highly recommend for a family of 5. I think the extra will long term pay off if you can afford it.

MidlifeStruggles · 30/01/2025 22:46

We had three car seats in a 2014 Honda CRV. It was tight but doable. We researched loads and it was one of the only cars that could fit the three seats. Have had it 7 years now and zero issues so far aside from normal wear and tear (brakes, tyres etc). Now nearing 100k miles, decided to keep it til it dies….. hold my wine, I may be here a while…..

TheVofR · 30/01/2025 22:55

God, things you wished you had never bought, Peugeot 5008 is up there. I needed 7 seater, I previous had Volkswagan Sharan which did 12 years and and about 110k miles before it became unreliable. Good things about the 5008 - I've got an automatic, which is brill, I love the ceiling glass panel, makes the whole car feel better, it is easy and light to drive. The parking sensors are quite good. Now downsides, it has got an onboard computer system that flags up warnings all the time, it won't pass MOT without, and no real idea what they are unless you spend plenty of money investigating, and it is trigger hair sensitive, it has adblue system, replacing bits of this have cost me loads, and I am not even convinced I needed to. To boot, the real back seats are so tiny that unless a very small person folds themselves up to get in it, there is no point. Also bringing down the seats to suit any "flat pack furniture" sees you crawling in the back clutching at a small red ribbon on the back of the seats that often breaks off in your hand. You can re-affix, but it makes you really cross. Depends on your usage of it, it might be OK, and we treat our cars badly as a family of 7, but, do get other views. Hope this helps xx

Lovelybitofsquirrel3 · 30/01/2025 22:57

We used to have that puegot and it broke down fairly regularly

Nurse1980 · 30/01/2025 23:07

We have 3, had to get a bigger car. Ended up with the Volvo XC90 that has 7 seats.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 30/01/2025 23:07

I’m on my second 5008 and they’ve both been very reliable.

The current one is a 1.2 manual GT line and it’s great.

super big boot with back seats down, enormous boot with middle seats down (which is a doddle to do). 3 separate middle row seats that can all be folded or moved forwards / backwards independently. Boot seats are big enough for small adults on short journeys with the middle row slid forwards a bit.

really comfortable dragon position with ability to ore set 2 drivers preferred position.

Great reversing camera and sensors.

clever automatic headlights

light and airy with panoramic roof.

I’d go for the newer one. Look after it according to the recommended service intervals and it’ll be great for years to come.

BertieBotts · 31/01/2025 11:25

We have a Peugeot 5008, same year, manual and it's great. Fits car seats easily and really comfy as a passenger. Happy to answer any Qs about it (though I might not know the answer! DH is the driver, as I don't have a licence.)

BertieBotts · 31/01/2025 11:27

Yes - do agree the rearmost seats are vv cramped. But a bit better if you slide the middle row forward. There are only 5 of us, so we don't use them that often but DS1 (16 and tall) often prefers the very back seat to squeezing in between two child seats in the middle row.

I get car sick if I ride in the very back and do find visibility out of the front is an issue for car sickness - fine in the front, of course.

HDready · 31/01/2025 11:32

I’ve got a 2019 5008 GT line and it’s great, none of the problems others have said. Loads of room for passengers and the boot space is great.

If you mean the warnings about other cars being close/braking, you can turn those off - in vehicle settings, safety.
