Sick of ‘little dog’ owners.

Every damn walk! Every sodding walk without bloody fail a little dog attacks or lunges or snarls or chases aggressively my large (retriever) dogs.

I am sick of it. Today’s dog was a cockerpoo. Yesterday it was a JRT. Day before it was a chihuahua.

Every fucking time the useless piece of crap owners say ‘he’s just playing.’ Newsflash, if your dog is snarling, lunging at my dogs, curling their lips or jumping up and snapping it is NOT playing. If my dog is backing away, my dog is not happy. If my dog is screaming, it is not happy

Big dog owners also often suck, but at least they have the decency to say sorry and put their dog on a leash. Or often leash their dogs before we meet. Little dog owners just laugh…and say ‘well he’s little so he won’t do any damage’ and then once I’m past let their dog go again - which 9/10 times means their dog chases mine!!! Honestly, do they not understand that being attacked for most dogs, when it happens near constantly, does affect their confidence and is a prime reason why so many dog do suddenly snap and turn aggressive?? Its basic common sense.

I know this thread will make no difference - little dog owners will continue to be entitled and incompetent. And little dog owners will pop onto this thread and say ‘my dogs not aggressive.’ Great. BUT disproportionately little dogs are the main instigator in most dog fights or dog on dog attacks I’ve seen.

Are you sure they're all being aggressive? Because dogs do play like that and my experience as a medium sized dog owner is that the vast majority of dogs do like to just play. My dog is six and has never been in a fight on a walk, but he plays every time.

MrsLJH · 26/01/2025 08:58

I have a 8 month old mini schnauzer. Schnauzers as a breed are quite vocal and being a puppy thinks everyone wants to play....plus we haven't got a cast iron recall yet. For this reason I keep her on a lead (in most cases) as I don't want to cause other dogs owners (big or little) distress and I don't want to be labelled as the type of dog owner you describe above) 🤷🏼‍♀️

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 26/01/2025 08:59

I hate the yappy little terrors.

Yep. Today’s dog drew blood (hence my angry post)!

Lunging up and snapping isn’t nor acceptable behaviour and it’s very different to open mouthed play (which, sadly, as a lab owner I am more than familiar with!!)

I'm not a dog person, but DH is and would love to have a dog. Your post is one reason why I have a said a categorical 'No' for the time being. I don't want to have to deal with other people's dogs every time I go out!

Dog people and how much they love to talk about dogs are another bugbear. I don't want to hear about your fucking dog!

FilledWithRageAlways · 26/01/2025 09:05

Honestly for people who don't covet dogs it's all dog owners. Being jumped on having wet muddy dogs shake themselves all over people, being barked at, being tripped up by meters of leash and of course the dog shit EVERYWHERE. Now I hear the cries....not all dog owners! No, but only dog owners.

Buildingthefuture · 26/01/2025 09:05

I have little dogs and big dogs. None of them behave as you describe. One absolutely would if I let him (small man syndrome) but he is kept on lead at all times. We walk multiple dogs multiple times a day in various locations and don’t have a problem with many dogs at all.
There was one Golden Retriever that used to hump one of my big dogs. Owner would just laugh about it, until said big dog firmly put GR back in his place. Never happened again.

And there was one stupid woman who allowed her young adult big dog to come barking and snarling in the face of my elderly, on lead, one eyed dog. Fortunately my dog is super placid and wasn’t phased but I did tell the woman to get control of her bloody dog. She made all the excuses “oh she’s just playing” ( she wasn’t, I’ve had dogs for 30 years, I know the bloody difference!) “oh she’s young”. So what? That pissed me off but she was told and we moved on.

Glenthebattleostrich · 26/01/2025 09:10

I own a toy cockapoo who is fear aggressive with large dogs due to being attached by 2 huskies while she was on lead (stitches and large vet bills type of attack).

We get it from all size dog owners, oh they are friendly. Great mine isn't, mostly because of owners like you.

And yes we have a behaviourist and ensure she's not in a position where she can be in trouble and she will walk past off lead ignoring other dogs.

Iamoldandwearpurple · 26/01/2025 09:11

Based on your attitude they aren't the only ones who need to check their behaviour!

Based on yours, I’d say you’re a small dog owner who thinks is it’s acceptable for your dogs to attack other dogs.

Little dog owners don't seem to bother to train their dogs to walk close by to them on pavements and tight spaces. They seem to use those flexi leads and don't bother to call them in once they see pedestrians and other dog walkers approaching.

I had a little bulldog thing actually get it's lead tied around my massive german shepherd after the owner let it crawl in between her legs. I had to untie it after the owner stood there gormless not doing anything. I've also had a family with two little dogs encourage (they were laughing and making barking noises to purposefully rile them up) their dogs to approach and snap at my nervous greyhound after we stood aside to let them pass. My dog was so scared he chewed through his harness to get away and narrowly missed fleeing into a busy road.

This. My husband plays golf. He came home on Friday and said that there was a discussion at the club about dog owners being allowed to take dogs around with them when they play a round of golf. One of the members pointed out, very loudly that, since dog walkers can already walk around the edges of the course, there was enough bloody dog shit everywhere now without adding to it.

Wonder if we can have one thread where people don’t completely exaggerate about muddy paws, being tripped and pavements flooded with shit. Oh, too late.

Viviennemary · 26/01/2025 09:24

I'm sick to death of all dogs tbh. Every turn there's a dog or even two dogs. It's small dog syndrome. Even I have heard of that. Quite amusing really.

You would have to live in an actual cave not to know that all of the above happens every day. Whenever I take my grandchildren out I spend half the time saying " Mind the poo". Dog owners are entitled arseholes these days. We live near the Malvern hills and spend a lot of time on them. The amount of dog shit is horrendous.

Snowmanscarf · 26/01/2025 09:27

I agree you with - the little dogs are generally the aggressive ones. They only get away with it because they’re small.

I’m more inclined to believe people who don’t have to exaggerate to make a point.

What a horrible op. I have a reactive small dog it's really tough, I pick her up and always explain and apologise to other owners. It's really worrying that you feel you are better than other dog owners because your dog is non reactive and big. There's so much wrong with the world and pets for most people are a little piece of love and affection that make our lives better, if not always easier. I think you take today to think about what's important to people and what actually makes people happy.

As the owner of a bigger hound this is 100% accurate! If I let my lad do even half the things smaller dog owners around me do on a daily basis he'd had been put to sleep for being an aggressive out of control monster years ago.

Hoardasurass · 26/01/2025 09:33

The worst of the yappy dogs around me are yorkie terrier size/type. They're noisy and viscous. My extremely motherly Huskie has a bad habit of treating them like puppies, this includes picking them up, carrying and cleaning them. Funnily enough most of the usual suspects now avoid her like the plague 🤣🤣🤣

ListenDontJudge · 26/01/2025 09:33

I agree. Our big dog has been snarled at by so many little dogs.

I think you should take today to think about why you are putting yourself and other dog owners to all this trouble and why you can't just get a better dog.

Everythingisnumbersnow · 26/01/2025 09:36

Agree re pp re all owners.

  1. Taking up the entire width of a pavement human-lead-dog.
  2. The jumping up repeatedly.
  3. Favourite was standing there gormlessly while a dog pissed on my friend's pram (with baby inside). Not even a sorry!
