No dryer but don't dry indoors

Starting new rental. Agreement says don't dry indoors but landlord doesn't provide a dryer to enable you to meet this. Isn't this a bit ridiculous?

Where in the north? We're in the north and dry outside all year.

Not everything can be put into a tumble dryer anyway, so even if you had one you couldn't do everything in it.

I'd get airers and a dehumidifier in your shoes, I think. It should solve any damp issues before they start.

I wonder where you can be in the North? We are in the North West and have a huge amount of rainfall especially in the winter but often in the summer too. Also rain-free days close to 100% humidity where things don't dry outside unless there's a strong wind.

NW coast. We often have a coastal breeze to assist.

We used to vent a tumble drier out of a bedroom window when there was no room to put in the kitchen. My daughter’s friends found it quite amusing.

If the landlord is so worried about his/her property, maybe he/she should live in it. You can't control how other people do their laundry. 😅

We used to go to a laundromat.

If the landlord was providing the white goods, had this rule, and didn't provide a drier I'd say they were being unreasonable (and short sighted). But, you're providing the washing machine so they only grumble is that they should've mentioned it in time so if you were purchasing one you could get a combined washer drier.

At the end of the day though just get an airer and dehumidifier as others have mentioned. Ido that and have for many years in various properties with no mould issues. Just don't dry washing over radiators / heaters, air your house sometimes or use trickle vents on windows if in a newer building, anf pop the airer and dehumidifier out of sight if you have an inspection.

I kept our condenser dryer in the garage for many years. The water will only freeze if you don't empty the tank after use. I empty the tank and clean the filter after every use. Doesn't everyone do this?

Judging by the amount of people calling up, unfortunately no not everyone does this. Of course you should, but just like cleaning the filters every time, and running a hot wash once a month on your washing machine, many people (most) do not do these things that help keep theore appliances in good order.

How does this work then? Two blue IKEA bags is several loads. Do you have piles of wet washing sitting around until the blue bags are full?

Lol no why would you think that, the clothes would end up smelling.

I do the a couple of loads of washing Friday night/early Saturday morning, two loads from our size of machine fills a bag and then they go to the laundrette once done. We do one bag on a Saturday and another on a Sunday. Drop off in the morning, go about our day and collect early evening, the laundrette dry it, fold it and pair socks etc it’s roughly £5 per bag(a bit more for things like towels etc).

RampantIvy · 25/01/2025 17:35

Laundrettes are thin on the ground round here. We have one in the local market town which is open about 2 or 3 days a week.

My washing simply doesn't dry in winter where I live. I'm not sure why some posters don't believe me. I have a rotary dryer as my garden is too small for a long washing line.

Our humidity went down to 67% this afternoon, but there wouldn't have been enough time to dry laundry before it started to rain.

I couldn't be arsed with that taking up half my weekend, even if there was a laundrette anywhere near me.

A tip from my granny (born 1898) If the pavements are dry your laundry will dry outside. 😉

It only takes 2hrs to do a weeks’ worth of laundry in a laundromat.
That is because you are washing them all at the same time, and then drying at the same time.

Congrats- but sod that for a game of soldiers

Sgtmajormummy · 26/01/2025 00:12

I used to love my Sunday trips to the launderette (dry only) when the kids were small and chaotic.
Dump everything into the dryer, go do the shopping, come back to a warm, fresh-smelling environment and fold dry fluffy stuff into piles. Maybe extending my stay with a hot chocolate…
Then return, the triumphant hunter gatherer, to kids and DH who had spent some “quality time” together and were happy to help put the shopping/washing away in exchange for treats.

I appreciate my luck that the launderette was a safe place night and day and nobody tried to steal our clothes!

mugglewump · 26/01/2025 00:24

You need one of those heated clothes airers with a cover and probably a dehumidifier to keep the moisture level down. The no clothes drying inside is because it causes condensation and damp, especially if the heating is not on much.

Are you in a house or flat? If you have no outside space to dry, ie a garden, it's illegal not to provide a dryer

Are you sure about that? I privately rented for 21 years, over half of which was in a flat and was never provided with a dryer???
