Cupre · 25/01/2025 07:52

Gods morning everybody.
I saw a lovely house in Tilbury and I would like to move there. I have a 3 years old daughter and I need a real opinion if I'm doing a good choice for her future. How is Tilbury? Is it nice area where she can grow up? Please be honest!

It’s an absolute hole, seriously. Lots of other lovely places to live in Essex, which are reasonably priced.

Chuchoter · 25/01/2025 08:46

Tilbury for decades has been utterly grim.

Avoid.

BitOutOfPractice · 25/01/2025 08:47

It’s not the best op. Sorry.

DeltaAlphaDelta79 · 25/01/2025 09:00

Tilbury is an absolute dive. Very crime ridden, no amenities, and everyone we know from there has either moved out or is in the process of moving out.

Chuchoter · 25/01/2025 09:10

What area are you in now?

Do you need public transport for work?

Does your child go to nursery or a child minder?

What is your budget?

Chuchoter · 25/01/2025 09:12

Tilbury is the most dangerous small town in Essex, and is among the top 10 most dangerous overall out of Essex's 315 towns, villages, and cities. The overall crime rate in Tilbury in 2023 was 165 crimes per 1,000 people. This compares poorly to Essex's overall crime rate, coming in 96% higher than the Essex rate of 84 per 1,000 daytime population. For England, Wales, and Northern Ireland as a whole, Tilbury is the 34th most dangerous small town, and the 183rd most dangerous location out of all towns, cities, and villages.
In March 2024, Tilbury had the worst crime rate in Essex for robbery, with 4 crimes reported and a crime rate of 0.38 per 1,000 daytime population. And in January 2024, Tilbury was the worst small town in Essex for criminal damage and arson, with 19 crimes reported and a crime rate of 1.8 per 1,000 daytime population. January 2024 was also a bad month for Tilbury residents, when it was Essex's most dangerous small town for drugs, recording 9 crimes at a rate of 0.86 per 1,000 daytime population.
The most common crimes in Tilbury are violence and sexual offences, with 809 offences during 2023, giving a crime rate of 78. This is 6% lower than 2022's figure of 857 offences and a difference of 4.60 from 2022's crime rate of 82. Tilbury's least common crime is theft from the person, with 7 offences recorded in 2023, a decrease of 30% from 2022's figure of 10 crimes.

How utterly depressing that people have to live like that.

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 25/01/2025 09:16

It's awful.

Abracadabra12345 · 25/01/2025 09:51

Poor OP! This must be a depressing response but thank goodness they asked first...

How utterly depressing people have to behave like that.

Curtainqueen · 25/01/2025 10:02

For the love of god don't move there. It's dreadful.

Chuchoter · 25/01/2025 10:46

'I’m originally from Grimsby which is bad enough. But when they made the Sacha Baron Cohen film ‘Grimsby’ they filmed it in Tilbury because it was worse and more depressing.'

UK's 'forgotten town' with no pub where locals can't even afford to get the bus

The neglected hard-up town in Essex has a grim crime rate and high levels of unemployment.

The small Essex town of Tilbury has a terrible reputation for crime and poverty.

It is not all doom and gloom in Tilbury, which hosts London’s biggest dock, a cruise ship terminal and a massive Amazon distribution centre. But the forgotten town has a list of shameful statistics from unemployment level and crime rate to voting turnout.
The port town does not have a single pub or public toilet. There is also no police station, which could be why the crime rate is so high. The crime rate in Tilbury is 127 crimes per 1,000 people in 2022, which is far higher than Britain’s average of 75.8.

There is also little for young people to do in their spare time. There is no cinema or swimming pool and only a few restaurants where you can dine inside.

Meanwhile, the town's council is an astonishing £1.3billion in debt while the unemployment rate is close to twice the national rate.

Many in the town appear resigned and have given up hope for any top-down changes.
One unemployed local Martin Howlett, 57, told The Sun that he had been forced to sell his car, motorbike, and caravan after missing out on universal credit payments. He admitted that he couldn't even afford the bus fare to visit his dad who is in hospital for cancer.
In the local elections this month, only 18.7 percent of the town's residents turned out to vote - the lowest in Thurrock council's polls.

Maria Cabral, 45, who volunteers at the One Community Centre, also told The Sun: "We are among the poorest areas, it is very sad to see. Even though we have the port and Amazon there is a lot of unemployment. People come in here to collect food stamps, to learn about training opportunities, apprenticeships, possible jobs, because there is no job centre here.”

Sally, 44, echoed this, adding: “Tilbury is finished. I wouldn’t walk down the street at night. I won’t let my five-year-old son go out on his own here when he gets older. They’ve closed down the youth clubs and the only pub is in West Tilbury. There was too much trouble in the pubs in the centre.”
Users on the Essex Reddit forum also confirmed the town's sad reputation.

A person from London, who was considering moving to Tilbury, asked the group whether the stories about the town were true. He posted: "I've driven through main Tilbury, Grays, Thurrock and Lakeside etc and it's not appeared to be terrible, but again driving through and actually living in the area are two different things."
@ComicBookPanda responded: "As someone living in Tilbury, I can honestly say that yes, it is (as terrible as it is claimed)."

@Significant-Shake274 was more blunt: "Tilbury is a s* hole. Stay away."
@Krebbin was more considerate: "You can find great villages in that part of Essex, but they are dull compared to London life. Tilbury, like most big towns on the east side of the Thames is relatively poor and underfunded. Not a place I would choose given other options."

A spokesperson for Thurrock Council said: “We know Tilbury is in need of investment, and residents will start to see improvements as we work with the community to help improve the town and provide new community facilities, using the £22.8million awarded to the town through the Towns Fund.

“The Tilbury Towns Fund Board, which is made up of local business and community leaders, has decided that funding will be used to boost learning and employment opportunities and improve Tilbury’s transport links. Their plans include creating a new Youth Facility in Tilbury.
“Thurrock Council works closely with a great many community groups in Tilbury, including Tilbury Community Forum, Tilbury Riverside Project, local faith groups and One Community, which has received council funding."

........

The council will throw money at grants at some of the problems but regeneration will never take off and the whole area is doomed.

LlynTegid · 25/01/2025 11:04

Even worse than Jaywick it seems.

Glad we have saved the OP from a terrible mistake.

Chuchoter · 25/01/2025 11:26

I wonder if the op is from London and is looking to move out where she can buy something cheaper?

I can't think why anyone from Essex would not know about the horrors of Tilbury otherwise.

Astrak · 25/01/2025 11:38

Twenty-five years ago, I worked there as a locum Local Authority children and families social worker. It was grim then. It had a high proportion of children looked after by the LA, and a higher one for children on the child protection register. There was a large population of immigrants. Once we became involved with their children, they disappeared. The high turn-over of senior LA executives and Directors going off on long-term sick leave sapped morale. I left after a year.

TheWellSungGame · 25/01/2025 11:58

Do not move to Tilbury.

East Tilbury is livable. Grays has some decent neighbourhoods. Chadwell and Stanford are just places. Chafford is boring but at least you have the train and Lakeside.

But do not move to Tilbury.

At least you are asking before going OP.

Haggisccd · 25/01/2025 16:27

Just looked at houses for sale. Tilbury isn’t that cheap, given the issues. Hoping OP finds something great elsewhere.

Cupre · 26/01/2025 21:08

Thank you everyone for your reply.
