To not understand how universal credit works

Please bare with me,I know a lot of benefit bashing goes on here but I really need advice as can't access any in RL until Monday at least.
Finally finally got around to working out how much I get now I'm on universal credit compared to when I was getting ESA and child tax( I'm soon to get my 4th monthly payment and from the very beginning I've really struggled and ended up very overdrawn within the first 2 weeks,I cut everything to the bone this month and already overdrawn with a week to go,this includes still having to pay rent, weekly food shop etc.
Turns out I'm getting £412 LESS a month!!! I assumed the transitional protection covered this!!!

@Miley1967 Thank you so much, really helpful thank you.Still a little confused though as if they take the transitional protection away I'll still be £230 worse off per month and the government are always keen to point out that this wouldn't be the case, but I'll take £200 down over £400 any day of the week.

I did transition thing just before xmas. I now recieve UC and also ESA. Use the journal thing and ask if esa payments continue?

I know I definitely shouldn't be getting esa alongside UC as it was income based.

Do you have deductions? It tells you at the bottom of your statement. Transitional protection is added before deductions

pinkroses79 · 25/01/2025 00:44

Are you sure you’re getting the transitional protection? It was missed off mine and I had to contact them about it.

Hi am getting some but by the looks not nearly what I should thanks.

Yes I'm sorry I don't understand either. Maybe the TP was calculated wrongly in the first place, but the LCWRA needs adding to the other elements and then TP calculated which doesn't appear to have been done. I hope you manage to get it sorted asap. The LCWRA element often gets missed off because ESA don't communicate with UC. I once had a client who was missing this element for 18 months but he did get it all backdated thankfully when I uncovered the mistake !

@Kneeboobs

I think one takeaway a year is more than reasonable!

I've had my eyebrows done once since covid. Probably would start again when I get back to work. Don't even get my hair cut once a year either. It's so expensive now. Last cut and blowdry was £70! Pre covid it was about £40.

Yeah, breast is expensive. If you really don't want to contend with the bones and skin on legs, you can buy skinless and boneless legs for a bit more. Lidl has the best value packs for these. You could slow cook a load up, portion it into bags and freeze for easy ready cooked chicken. There are so many delicious slow cook recipes on tinternet now.

It sounds like you're very much trying your best with what you have. I'm sorry its such a struggle. I an only imagine your panic and stress. Everything is so expensive and benefits haven't fallen in line with that, IMO.

Yes I use powder, also got those laundry eggs on discount dragon 70 washes for £5 so bought 4,I use home bargains snow fairy laundry cleaner instead of softener,so can skip using conditioner and do a cool wash, thermostat only ever up to 18,cook a lot and batch freeze when I can, which is economical but helps with disability also.
I'm so so grateful to be in a country where I'm able to receive benefits when unable to work.Just a big adjustment when it dropped so suddenly.

Hi,no no deductions.

I would definitely change the rent payment to be paid to your landlord directly on your behalf
It means you never see the money so never leaves you trying to find it like when you've had to make the payment yourself
I find budgeting is much easier this way

DragonFly98 · 25/01/2025 18:30

Sorry I got distracted. As others have said they should be paying you LCWRA and it should be backdated. Make sure they do not remove your transitional protection as it should have been there from the beginning. This may be a lengthy process of UC messing things up so you need to stay firm and say 1) you were entitled to LCWRA from migration date can you add now.
2) backdate the LCWRA to start of claim
3) the LCWRA should not cause removal of your TP
Just checking it was the support group of ESA?

Monstermashermashedthemonster · 25/01/2025 19:12

I switched over in November via migration and I get the same has I did when I received tax credits.
Actually we get a little more because dh gets the carers element on uc now.

Surely if the LCWRA had been added from the beginning though, there wouldn't be any TP as the total UC would have been £416 more than without it and likely no TP due?

Yes but if they add on the LCWRA and leave the transitional protection as is then I will be on the same money as when on EsA as it should be.

BlwyddynNewydd · 25/01/2025 22:14

I think the TP is to cover the severe disability payment.

You should be getting LCWRA, and this has been missed off your payments.

You need to speak to someone who knows what they are talking about. The three month waiting period they have mentioned would be for someone just newly being awarded LCWRA. As you were previously on ESA that LCWRA element should start form the start of your claim.
Please make sure you send any messages on your journal under the ' payments ' option. these will then go straight to your case manager who should know what they are doing. I'm so sick of people being given wrong advice .
Have you recently been awarded support group on ESA ? if so then a waiting period may be relevant but if you have been on ESA long term then this is wrong.

Sassy306 · 27/01/2025 23:56

There is a Facebook group called universal credit help.
Join and post in the group.
They are extremely knowledgeable and will tell you what you should receive and will even tell you exactly what you need to put on your journal to get things sorted

Miley1967 · 28/01/2025 08:20

Op when you leave another message on your journal you need to write that the LCWRA element should have been added from the start of your claim under transitional rules regulation 19. This is unless you have recently been awarded ESA support group/ LCWRA.

Kneeboobs · 28/01/2025 09:18

@Miley1967 Thank you so much,no new claim, been on it long term.
Thanks @Sassy306
