People with driveways parking on the street

I live in a long row of terraces. Most roads are terraced here, as I live in a fairly working class town. This means that the only people with driveways are the end of the terraces. I live a few doors down from the end.

My neighbour has in the last 6 months or so decided to mostly stop using their driveway. It’s a relatively fit retired couple. They probably only use the car a handful of times per week, and instead park it on the road outside our houses. They’ve got this thing now where on the odd occasion they do have it on their drive, as soon as the person moves from the space outside our house, they are up and put their car on it. Even if that’s at the crack of dawn; I’ve seen them peering out at the window at 6:30am, on the rare occasion I’ve got that space and I leave for work. They will be loitering by the door waiting for me to leave.

I don’t quite understand the logic. They are only one of two houses on the street with two dedicated parking spaces, with a perfectly wide accessible drive. I get back quite late at night from work and have to park several streets away when I’m heavily pregnant. So admittedly it does wind me up a bit seeing their empty driveway while all the other residents struggle to park. I know legally they are doing nothing wrong at all. But would I be unreasonable to put a note through their door asking them to possibly use their perfectly accessible driveway to free up more space for the majority who don’t have off road parking?

The annoying thing is by adding driveways people are taking away street parking spaces from other people which is why I think it's a bit cheeky if they don't use them. Different if houses are built with them if course.

Just park in their drive, it's not illegal to do this. Then when they question you on it just tell them that you used it as they never do and you assumed they prefer the road. 🤷
if they don't want someone to park on their drive then they should use it themselves and not use the road.

It's still considered trespassing even if not technically illegal it's a civil offence

Someone on our street turned their driveway into a parking space, side on to the house - it wouldn't fit if it were facing the house. The road markings are about 1 1/2 car lengths, and if people park carelessly that's 2 car spaces taken away from public parking. Gives me the rage.

People park like absolute feckwitts round here - opposite ends of road, right on the corner of a turning etc

Really racks me off slaloming around cars, especially as there's driveways and you can see space on them, it just takes a bit of effort to maybe move the outer car if the other is needed

It's also dangerous being on the wrong side of the road to get out a turning, because there's a fucking car blocking the side of the road you're supposed to be on. Great fun if something is trying to turn in as well, and is also on the wrong side of the road due to the sodding car opposite the junction

What's worse is off the busier road, there's cars right up to the turning most of the time, and there's a school just up the road, makes it so dangerous and the potential for a nasty accident- i always turn in super slowly knowing there's probably a car but some people may not

Really want to get some double yellows put in but wouldn't know how to go about it

It all kicked off in the neighbourhood group chat recently as someone's massive car was parked opposite the turning out the road, and someone parked theirs the opposite side, no way an ambulance could have fitted. Said massive range rover is now right on the corner of the turn into our close, causing anyone exiting it to be on the wrong side of the road. Again had issues this morning where i was forced to be on the wrong side waiting to get out, and someone was trying to get in, also impeded by parked cars on their part of road. Really want to put another moan in the group chat about the range rover now causing yet more problems but think all hell would break loose!

If these are public roads, the turn into the close should have double yellow lines for several metres around the junction. That's standard where I live. You can ask your local council highways department to do it. Years ago I went to see them in person and got some double yellows put in along the side of my house in place of a single yellow. That was in addition to those already around the junction.

It takes a while but they will get around to it according to their timetable of works and legal requirements to consult or whatever. My council publishes a list every so often, maybe twice a year, of changes they've made to local road markings, whether it's no loading or yellow lines etc.

Thank you, they are in desperate need of double yellows, people seem to be so incredibly selfish round here, bloody range rover is still dumped right in the entrance to the road, so I think it's going to take double yellows, rather than relying on people using common sense/decency

Need to get a message together to send to them
