To ask for wedding dress suggestions

Unashanedly posting here for ideas ...

I have a very dear friend who's a senior lady (70+) and getting married, looking for recommendations about what to wear and where to get it - we live in the east midlands and ideally she'd prefer somewhere she can actually visit, though realises it may come down to ordering online in the end

Slim and very classy, she has in mind something silvery, long and straight, (definitely not a meringue, though TBH she's the sort of lady who'd look good in a bin bag Smile), possibly with some beading or whatever to make it "bridal" but nothing over the top

Not an easy endeavour which could be sorted by the standard bridal shops I know, but any suggestions would be very warmly appreciated so I can forward suitable links to her

Firstly it would have been more sensible to post this on the Style and Beauty board. Very odd to instead create a thread on a board dedicated to argument.

Generally it’s helpful if the woman seeking advice gives an indication of her clothing size and budget.

There was a beautiful long silvery beaded dress posted on a S&B thread yesterday, but I don’t remember where it was from.

Also coming on to suggest Phase Eight, But what I would actually suggest for her is a personal shopper at Selfridges in Birmingham,

You don't mention budget but this shop, in the Hope Valley in Derbyshire, has a huge range and bespoke service https://www.alexandra-anne.co.uk/. I suspect it's not cheap though!

This brand in particular specialises in beading www.alexandra-anne.co.uk/eliza-jane-howell-wedding-dresses

Some lovely ideas so far - thanks all - and I hadn't thought of Style & Beauty, @MsWintertowne, so might put it on there as well

About budget: she can afford the best but is also very grounded and probably wouldn't want to go toom mad for something that'll only be worn once

Again, warmest thanks for the generous help so far ...

Yes because clearly posting in AIBU you get snotty unhelpful comments like this one.

Goodness me. There are more sensitive ways of making this suggestion.

Quite a lot of choice here https://www.needleandthread.com/collections/bridal-dresses several with sparkle to be picked out from the fussy ones which don't fit your brief.

Needle and Thread dresses are extremely high waisted! I wanted one as my wedding dress last year but the waist was about 3in above my actual waist. Perfect for women of certain proportions but strangely specific.

The Ballroom at The Plain in Oxford is worth a visit..

IdaGlossop · 24/01/2025 19:34

Getting a bit carried away here....tailoring is the main vibe here but there are some options with restrained embellishment your friend may like https://www.safiyaa.com/collections/bridal-1?page=3

How about this silver silk dress? Your friend could even re wear it if she has a taste for grand dinners.

Again more lovely suggestions or which I'm grateful, though important to remember she's 70+ so does need something "mature"

Beautiful as they are I can't quite see her going for the very expensive ones however; her practical side would kick in, given it's just for one day Smile

Perhaps something like this https://www.adriannapapell.com/products/scoop-back-sequin-gown-in-champagne-09187460

I wore this one to my daughter’s wedding in the evening (mid 60’s). I also have a black one that is use for formal black tie and another AP column dress heavily beaded that I wore to DD’s wedding in the day. Easy to wear and always attract lots of compliments. Downside is they are made for very tall people (and I’m 5’2” plus heels)! I’ve managed to shorten all of them - took a while but very possible if you can sew!

Scoop Back Sequin Gown In Champagne

Unleash the glamour at your next formal event in this striking sequin evening dress. This gorgeous sequin gown is filled with fabulous features, including short sleeves, a long, flowing soft skirt, a crew neck and a scoop back with a subtle back zipper...

Love the Adrianna Papell pieces, @bouncydog; they're probably the closes thing I've yet seen to the sort of thing she's mentioned so will definitely add that one to the list - and she can always get a dressmaker for any alterations!!
