To be unhappy with dentist?

Saw the dentist today due to sudden swollen/painful gums. Dentist took x ray and said my wisdom tooth is trying to emerge but is impacted, and it doesn’t seem like there is enough room for it to come in. He also said my gums could be infected in the impacted area, but could not be infected, he is not sure. So he gave me antibiotics just in case and just said to monitor it.

Meanwhile I feel left with no tangible advice. I can’t really eat as I end up chewing directly on the area, due to where it is located. eating is very uncomfortable and flares pain. Plus I’m worried about food debris getting stuck there, like inside the gum pocket, especially if it’s already infected.

Aibu to be unhappy with the dentist? I just feel left with questions and in pain. I just wonder if there was more he could have done like cutting the gum open more to allow it to emerge or to remove it if there’s not enough room?

Use Corsadyl mouthwash as well - should help ease any inflammation/ swelling.

if after 5 days of antibiotics and mouthwash it isn’t better- you’ll have to go back.

Fingers crossed that works though

Dentist here. It sounds like your dentist could have communicated a little better to you. You probably have pericoronitits - inflammation of soft tissue around a partially erupted tooth - essentially you’re teething.
Often wisdom teeth remain partially erupted throughout life and this can be a problem that comes and goes. It’s not really possible to just ‘cut the gum’ - the treatment if this is recurrent is often extraction or coronectomy, and wisdom tooth extraction can need referral as it can be quite complex.
id advise warm salt water mouth wash, if you can, do brush the area with your toothbrush and try and get a tepe in the gum too to clean the bacteria out. Ibuprofen is best for the pain. Also corosodyl in a water pik in the area where the tooth is poking out can really help.
Chew on the opposite side. Antibiotics should really only be given in certain circumstances like lymph node swelling, spreading soft tissue infection, fever etc.
Id ask for a review appointment once this has settled and see what they can suggest if it keeps happening. This can be removal of the tooth - often by oral surgery, or removal of an opposing wisdom tooth, or the crown removing from the tooth if its cloae tp nerves meaning extraction is too risky
hope this helps

Thank you both for the advice! It’s given me clarity on what the next steps may be.
