Almost guaranteed redundancy...look for another job

Can I just ask what general opinion would be if you were almost definitely going to be made redundant?

Wait around for the redundancy pay or start looking for a new job?

Financial circumstances - 3 kids, mortgage, limited savings

Def start looking for another job

MyProudHare · 23/01/2025 21:27

Depends what redundancy package they are offering... what's the timeframe on this? I'd be looking to get the money and also be job seeking in the meantime.

Just the standard 1.5 weeks pay per year's service. Based on 8 years service.

I think it’s hard to give a blanket statement .

Are you in. Demanding industry ?

how many redundancies ?

1.5 times 8 on minimum wage very different to much higher paid jobs

Just a basic data processing role. Few grand below national average salary. Two redundancies.

I’d start looking around, get my pay out and then walk into another job having lopped a chunk off my mortgage.

comedycentral · 23/01/2025 22:59

Based on what you've said, I'd take the redundancy and temp until I found the role I wanted.

SweedieLie · 23/01/2025 23:01

It would depend on the general rules of redundancy in your company.

In my workplace anyone made redundant is given four months (paid) notice, once the decision is final...and you can provide normal notice at any time within that period and still get the payout if you leave early. I have no idea if that's standard or just my employer...but I would wait until it was definite then take my chances that i'd be able to find a new job in 4 months.

EilonwyWithRedGoldHair · 23/01/2025 23:17

I'm in that situation. I'll start looking for a job with a few months to go but say I can't start until 'x' date. Redundancy will be a minimum of approx six months net pay and I might get offered a bit extra, waiting for details.

Just standard redundancy here. So would be 3 months pay. Not sure re rules around leaving before the 3 months is up

I'd look to secure another job now tbh. Hanging around for months in that atmosphere for maybe £6/7k and then having the stress of looking for a other job with limited resources does not sound tempting

happy2025 · 24/01/2025 08:25

I started looking at around 3 months before my departure date. Landed a couple of options and had committed a start date that was after my end date of redundancy. Enjoyed a month break in between jobs and started the new one. Why wait?

Usually in redundancy they will pay you your notice period rather than keep you hanging around, so the end date of your current job should be fairly clear soon enough.

AirborneElephant · 24/01/2025 08:38

Very much depends on the redundancy terms and the availability of your role in your area. Statutory only, definitely look for a new job. Anything more than three months (plus notice period), I’d probably stick around. You may as well look and see if you get offered something good, it will save you the must-take-anything panic.
