Not go on a holiday

Over the last few years during the winter months I've watched a webcam of Zakopane (a winter resort in Southern Poland) & promised myself when I retired I'd go & enjoy the winter there. I'm not a winter sportsperson I wanted to enjoy the snow & scenery.

Earlier in January I was checking the weather forecast & found a week where snow is forecast & booked my Easyjet flight. Since then the forecast completely changed & now it's forecasting 10 degrees & mainly rain.

I've only booked flight & car park to date but AIBU to consider not going or should I just go for a change of scenery?

I don’t think there’s a weather forecast system on Earth that can accurately predict the weather more than 10 days ahead, and even then it’s still a bit hit and miss. So you perhaps booked a bit too early to guarantee snow. But not sure you will get any recompense from insurance for this. I’d just go, immerse yourself in a different culture, different scenery for a week, and just enjoy. There will be lots to do and see, and any holiday this time of year is nice. Even those booking Florida have been caught out, so you are not alone😁

If you don't mind losing the money and you've changed your mind, just don't go, that's absolutely fine!

ginasevern · 23/01/2025 13:37

Well you're braver than me OP, I'd be heading south to somewhere warm! However, I'd still go if I was you. I was reading about Zakopane just the other day and it looks pretty. It will be something different with different food etc. A new experience.

MrsJHernandez · 23/01/2025 14:27

If you're happy to throw your money down the drain, then its absolutely fine not to go. Personally, I'd go regardless because I wouldn't want to pay twice. So, if you can afford to pay twice, you may as well go twice if there's no snow the first time!

From memory there is an excellent thermal/aqua park in Zakopane if the weather is really rubbish, if not you could still do some hiking and sight seeing. I think you could also do a day trip to Krakow which is pretty cool too.

LondonLawyer · 24/01/2025 02:09

Zakopane's a lovely place, I'd definitely still go.

AdventureSeeker12 · 24/01/2025 03:44

Hoping I've caught you on time OP.

Poland is one of my favourite countries and I've been to about 30!

A friend of mine has been in Zakopane the past few days whilst in Kraków, and it's been snowing!

Really would encourage you to go - you've booked it for a reason and I think you'd kick yourself if you didn't go!

Enjoy x

Thanks all for your contributions.

I went but changed the plan from 5 days in the mountains to only 2 days. Instead I headed from Krakow to Warsaw to catch up with a friend & visit the city which I've not been to in 40 years.

In Zakopane the only snow was in shadows or in piles from being cleared away. The town was beautiful as the Xmas lights were still up making it magical.

I'll keep an eye out for snow for the rest of winter .
