AIBU to be surprised that when you renew a British Passport, you have to send any passports off you have from other countries?

Just renewing British passport. In the last few years, have gained an Irish passport. I was surprised to find that in order to renew my British passport, I need to send my Irish passport to the British Passport office as well. The only alternative to sending off the Irish passport, is to do a colour photocopy of all the 30+ pages, which would be a massive task.
Is anyone else surprised by this or is it just me? I had thought that one of the advantages to having a second passport is that you can use it when the other one is not available. Yes, I know that I could photocopy the second passport if desperate, but what a faff, and why does the British Passport Office want my Irish passport anyway?

Being a dual national is of huge significance if you need assistance abroad, and there has to be a means for the UK to know your status.

Why? If I’m travelling abroad on my British passport and need assistance, the British embassy will help. No need to get the Irish involved. And nice versa.

Well not official documents.
I have my citizenship ceremony this week and have just done all the documentation for my British Passport and can assure you that they ave insisted in both passports being in the same name…ie my maiden name.
All my other documents are in my married name.

Yes official documents. They can't compel you to use your maiden name if that's not the name you actually go by.

So this is how it goes…I have a passport from a different country that insists that all their passports are signed in maiden name. So all the women in my family have their passports in their maiden name but other docs can be in their married name.
Now after living in the UK for 40 years DH has convinced me to get a British Passport.
My new British passport also has to be in my maiden name. I have been informed by the British Government that my new British passport will have to be in the same surname as my birth passport ie. My birth name/maiden name.
Apart from that all my other documentation ie. British Driving License, bank docs, NHS docs etc are all in my married name.

I have a birth passport in my maiden name, my British one in my married name. It just has a note saying I have another passport with another name on it.

It's completely normal to have one passport in married name and one in birth name, since they are legally both your name. No idea why you'd be told that, it's not the case.

It's completely normal to have one passport in married name and one in birth name, since they are legally both your name. No idea why you'd be told that, it's not the case.

According to the instructions for Passport Office staff,
"Customers must apply for a passport using the name they use for all official purposes and must match the name on their foreign documents. Although we expect the customer to change the name on their foreign document to match the name on their passport application, some customers may not be able to."

So the PO will only issue a passport with a different name if the applicant cannot change the name on the foreign document.

Yes, and pp can't. So, as I said, it's normal in her situation to have one in each name, with a note on the British passport.

@Ace56 but the UK won't help you in Ireland. Because you're an Irish national. Thats countries that allow multiple citizenships need to know.

Is that a very new thing? I have an Australian passport and they have never requested to see it.

I've had to send Aust PP in for my, DH, DS, DD British passports every single time. Not new.

How odd. The last time I did that was 2016 and was not asked (admittedly I was not living in the UK at the time.)

I will see what happens at my next renewal.

It’s definitely a requirement now and has been for at least a few years.

You don’t have to send your Aussie passport in though. A colour photocopy of each page is sufficient. Given how much an Aussie passport costs now there’s no way I’m sending it off to be potentially lost in transit or by HMPO.
