So my kids school was put on lock down at home time today due to a man threatening a parent with a knife i managed to get into the play ground and picked the youngest from nursery before the gates were locked and my older kids were not allowed out parents outside gates frantic

We couldn't take our children for 45 minutes

I nearly collapsed in the play ground with anxiety I felt very faint

The school were fast at acting closed everything immediately and kept the children safe but

I don't want to send them tomorrow as I'm my opinion it could be gang related and I'm scared of repercussions and the school being caught up in it
I am now looking at other schools

Am i being unreasonable to think I'm not over reacting ?
The school was rated inadequate by ofstead and now it's an academy

You are not overreacting but you can’t keep your children off school. I would be going in though to ask what’s being done to improve safety.

Unless you’re intending to move to a gang free part of the country (good luck finding one) then you don’t really have options.

The school found a ‘not school’ problem occurring very close to their students. They promptly and effectively acted to keep their students safe.

Sounds like a good reason to stay with the school. They’re demonstrated they can handle these situations well.

Soend some time learning some techniques to manage anxiety. Doesn’t help anyone if you faint.

Sounds like the school reacted really well. How were the kids when they were finally allowed to leave?

Ella31 · 23/01/2025 00:26

It sounds like the school knew exactly what to do and did it promptly. Imagine if they released a load of terrified children into the playground with some lunatic running around. No they locked the place down and secured the children. I can only imagine the teachers and other staff were frightened too but they acted professionally and quickly from what you described. 45 minutes must have so frightening for you, but I'd imagine the school was liaising with authorities and school boards as to when it was safe to let the kids out.

I doubt very much it was a gang related crime, far more like it to be someone's husband kicking off.

CeaseAndDessist · 23/01/2025 00:37

I just saw this reported in the newspaper OP, must have been terrifying.

Floralnomad · 23/01/2025 00:46

Sounds like they handled a difficult situation really well . The schools concern is the safety of the children , not the anxiety of the parents .Not really much they could have done to alleviate that .

A fellow pupil pulled a knife on my ds, 13 at the time, in a changing room where no others were around. I home schooled him from that day on. YANBU

Speak to the school and ask the police if there's any ongoing danger. This could happen anywhere though, so changing schools probably isn't necessary.

Sounds like the school did a good job protecting the LOs. I can understand your worry though, and I don't think I'd send my kids back until I'd spoken to the school and police to understand what happened and if there's any risk.

I'm so sorry all the kids went through this. WTF is wrong with people?!

Cappuccinowithonesugarplease · 23/01/2025 04:44

The school did absolutely the best thing in that situation.
Moving school everytime something goes wrong is classic anxiety. You definitely need to get help managing it.
