Should knives with points be banned?

All the recent attacks have been through stabbing, why not ban pointy knives and just sell knives with rounded ends? Or at least heavily, heavily restrict the sale of pointy knives to those who have a legitimate need for them, have them branded with serial numbers and prevent re-sale etc?

They probably use these already to get a better edge. But sales will rise.

@UnstableEquilibrium There's such a thing as a tomato knife?!?! I've reached the grand old age of 53 and never knew they existed.

I did buy a set of 'the world's sharpest knives' about 20yrs ago after being sucked in by a demo in a supermarket, even they don't cut a tomato unless its the one with a pointy end.

Who knew.

Yep, and they do exactly what it says in the packet. Get one and tomatoes just lie down and spontaneously disassemble themselves.

Unfortunately human skin is just as susceptible to their fiendish powers as tomato skin and I don't think I've ever used one without shaving a bit off my finger.

How on earth would you cut a very ripe tomato without a knife with a point on?

Cheese knives, you need the point to get the cheese.

My DC both left home at 18 and couldn't buy kitchen knives or cutlery. I had to buy them on their behalf because they weren't 21.

How would you cut a ripe tomato?
Er, with a small serrated knife, same as ever?

How would I do my paper cut crafts without a sharp point?

Tell me about it. Needed to replace some kitchen knives recently and because I was out of the loop re knife laws I tried to buy one from Sainsbury’s but there didn’t seem to be any. I asked a member of staff if they sold kitchen knives and she gave me a very stern look and said no very emphatically.

So yes, had to get them from Amazon and I did indeed have to show the delivery man my passport before he’d hand them over.

My tomato knives have rounded ends. They're evil super-sharp bastards with a thirst for human blood IME, but it would be difficult to kill someone with them.

I have a couple of those nd they are excellent but bloody useless faced with a carrot or a big spud and wouldn't even touch a swede.

How the fuck do I get into my watermelons then?

Who the hell cares about your watermelons?

Water41 · 22/01/2025 23:41

I carry a knife. It's about three inches long and I keep it sharp. Mostly for work (because coming across a horse caught in a haynet once without anything to help is enough) but it quite often ends up in my bag.

XenoBitch · 22/01/2025 23:44

@AmateurDad
Ok....
Do you just rot in front the TV? I bet you do.

Is that legal? I thought you could get done for carrying something that could be used as a weapon.

You get done if you get caught.
I have a caution for carrying a bladed article. It was a tiny craft knife... 6cm long, and still in the wrapper. I was arrested and a woman in my 40s... not a teen in a gang.

It's a tool for my job. It's also legal to carry as long as it's under three inches and not used in an offensive way.

NotVeryFunny · 23/01/2025 00:49

No.

saltinesandcoffeecups · 23/01/2025 00:58

Quick… replace “knife“ with “gun” in all of these posts and you’re one step closer to understanding Americans 🤣

Oh and add a fundamental (dare I say inalienable) right to possess a knife.

Well except for Amateurdad.

Presumably because you didn't have a reason to be carrying it ie you hadn't just brought it or weren't taking it to for example a craft class?

I think using a gun to cut your tomatoes might be just a tad excessive 🤣

My knitting needles are longer than most kitchen knives and can definitely stab someone...

(Side note, but even the blunt holding needle can stab deeply... as I've discovered by pure accident 🤣)

Have you ever sat on a lace needle? 😳

Are they like tatting needles?
Because I've stabbed my hand with those 😭

mainecooncatonahottinroof · 23/01/2025 01:11

No, it's a ridiculous premise.

Knives have a legitimate purpose.

If one person wants to attack another, they will find a way.

Are you going to ban bottles too in case someone breaks one and stabs someone?

Close but slightly not as sharp!

Why were you searched for it to be found?
