Pre packaged wraps

I’ve forgotten lunch a few times and ended up getting pre packaged sandwiches which I’ve avoided near enough for all of my pregnancy. I’ve never had an issue with eating them but now that I’m pregnant I’m worried about toxoplasmosis and listeria. Has anyone had this and was baby ok?

You'll be fine. Definitely better for all sorts of reasons to make your own food but the chances of buying a contaminated sandwich are pretty slim.

This wouldn't have even crossed my mind. Ate plenty of prepackaged sandwiches and wraps in pregnancy. All good - three babies born healthy.

I was on the maternity assessment unit on Monday (for my blood pressure, I'm 32 weeks and it's been a pickle) and I'd been there so long they gave me a pre made sandwich and some biscuits to tide me over. I'm entirely sure that the midwife wouldn't have given me something very dangerous to eat 😊

That’s reassuring to hear. This is my first pregnancy and I’m just panicking about everything tbh

Never avoided anything like that. There's nothing on NHS guidance suggesting you should.

I did see something about pre packaged sandwiches and the risk of listeria

I'm on the page now to recheck. Can't see anything. Anyway, you're fine and don't need to worry about this.

That's completely normal, I was exactly the same in my first pregnancy, it's a big learning curve! Try not to read too much, just stick to the NHS advice. There's lots of advice on the Internet that isn't relevant to our country, so you can disregard it.

Unless it's a raw pork and cat poo wrap, you will be fine OP! (In all seriousness, the NHS website has some sensible and measured guidance on food-related risks, and most things are absolutely fine to eat during pregnancy.)

Yeah I read about the cat poo. We don’t have a cat so I’m not worried it was just the other food stuff

If you had listeria you'd probably know about it

Eminybob · 22/01/2025 18:31

I lived on boots meal deals when I was pregnant with DC1. Especially those triple sandwich packs, 1 chicken, 1 prawn and 1 BLT. I was always ravenous by lunch time and they were all that would satisfy me.

No problems with my pregnancy or DC.

I chose to avoid any with salad in

NMc16 · 22/01/2025 18:39

I normally do make my own lunches as I know what’s in them. I was just in a rush and grabbed something at lunch as I was starving. I’m hoping it’s ok. This was a few hours ago and not sick so far so guessing it’s probably fine

It's pre-bagged salad you have to watch out for. It's one of the biggest causes of listeriosis, which can be fatal to both you and baby. I wouldn't take anyone else's "I was fine" anecdata as useful evidence that you should carry on eating anything you're worried about either.

Yeah it's the salad to be mindful of

My cousin caught listeria, lost the baby and was in ICU for 2 weeks. She has no idea where she caught it from, but it is indeed very rare.

My first pregnancy was abroad, where the guidance is slightly different to the UK- so I was likely overly cautious. Deli meats like ham/salami risk listeria, salad veg in sandwiches last year cause an outbreak of E-coli in the UK, frozen and fresh berries have cause Hep A- the list goes on.

Check the guidance where you live and think about alternatives, such as something hot, if you can't take lunch in yourself.
