To want to move due to crime rates

I live in a London borough but close to Essex and it is progressively getting worse.

Today I witnessed a women punch another women on the train. The aggressor was off her head on something. Thankfully there was off duty police who got the aggressor off the train but the poor victim was left stunned.

I have a three year old and I just feel like this area is getting worse and worse. I just want to move to somewhere safe but does that even exist in the UK.

DH has three other kiddies we need to think about too so can't move too far. I feel so scared of where I'm raising my child.

Has anyone else noticed their areas getting worse, if so did you move?

Just make sure you do your research
ILs have recently moved to Buxton thinking it would be nice...not realising there's a high crime rate there!

There's no crime problem. You're imagining it. It's the media scaremongering to sell papers.

Yes I keep being told this. I keep being told there’s no increase in crime, yet I live in zone 2 and am about to make a witness statement after I saw a young lad being attacked by a pack of other young men outside my local tube station. I saw what I believed to be a machete but as my children were in the car I got to a safe distance and called the police. They called me later to tell me he’s badly injured in hospital, don’t know if the machete was used. Sure I’ll find out. There a group of youths who I regularly see cycling in my area with masks and balaclavas on who snatch phones. There’s a drug dealer round the corner who opens at about 8 an so all the local junkies congregate on our street from 6 am onwards. Last week I drove past a bus on the road parallel to mine, with the alarms blaring and a loud speaker chanting “This Bus Is Under Attack Please Call 999!” while inside someone was grappling with the driver. Nearly every day on the neighbourhood app someone relates that their teen has been robbed for their phone.

Crime IS worse in my area, I know it is because I live in it and never saw any of this over the last two decades. For some reason people like you keep telling me it’s all media scare stories though.

I was being sarcastic. My inlaws left London 15 years ago because of the crime.

Sorry! I thought you were serious 😁. That’ll teach me to read the whole thread! Quite upset about the attack I saw though so just stormed on to say my bit. Apologies x

I go and check official crime reports in the area which are published monthly. It usually puts my mind at rest. There were 39 crimes committed in my area last month, 30 of them were shoplifting as we live near a big shopping mall. 8 domestic rows and only 1 burglary. I recon that's as good as it gets.

Whereabouts do you check this please?

We moved out of London a few years ago as the level of anti-social behaviour and low-level crime in our area was becoming a problem. I'm not even sure any of the issues would even be captured in crime statistics as I doubt the police investigated. Mostly groups of kids stealing bikes, vandalising bus stops, harassing people, smoking pot in play areas, the odd public bin set on fire, some fights in the street, some mobile phones theft. Nothing to make me fear for my safety, but it definitely affects your enjoyment of the area. I'd say move if you can.
